Dr. Jerrold Ross, Ed.D. is Dean of The School
of Education and Academic Vice President of the Staten Island
campus at St. John's. He was formerly Associate Dean for Academic
Affairs in the School of Education at New York University. He was
Director of the National Arts Education Research Center at New York
University 1987-1995.
Dr. Ross holds a Ph.D. in Music Education from New York
University and an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Emerson
College, Boston. He served as President of the New York College of
Music as well as Director of the renowned Town Hall in New York
City.
He began his career as a teacher of music in the public schools
of Syosset, Great Neck and New York. He also taught music education
at New York University where be became Chairman of the Department
of Music and Music Education and Head of the Division of Arts and
Arts Education before becoming Associate Dean of The School of
Education.
Dr. Ross has been Director of many research and training
projects including those funded by the Rockefeller, Mellon, J.P.
Morgan Chase, Pinkerton and Samuel Rubin Foundations, the U.S.
Department of Education, the National Foundation on the Arts and
Humanities and the National Endowment for the
Arts.
Dr. Ross was a founding Board member of the Teacher Education
Accreditation Council, a national accrediting group for schools of
education (1998-2006). He served as a member of the Teacher
Education Certification and Practice Board, as well as an evaluator
of higher education programs for the State of New York, New Jersey,
Connecticut and Rhode Island. He is also a member of the New York
State Commissioner's Advisory Committee on Teacher Education and
Chair of the Arts Education Advisory Panel to the Panel on
Educational Priorities of the New York City Public Schools. He
served as a member of the Board and Secretary of the Alumni and
Friends of LaGuardia High School for Music and the Arts in New York
City. He is currently a member of the U.S. Committee for
UNESCO.
In June 2006 he was awarded a medal for Distinguished Achievement
as an Administrator by St. John's University. In July 2006 the
Trustees of the Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts
named a new Discovery Center building for children ages 6-8 in
honor of Dr. Ross' 36 years as President of the Board (1968 -
2004). The New York State Education Department and its Board
of Regents presented him with a certificate to commemorate the
occasion and the New York State School Music Association cited him
for "50 Years of Service to the Children of New York State."
