By a strict definition, human activity is only environmentally
sustainable when it can be performed or maintained indefinitely
without depleting natural resources or degrading the natural
environment.
Attempting to achieve a sustainable future is having the lowest
possible negative impact on the Earth’s environment. For university
operations this means consumption of minimal resources, using
renewal resources, lowering our carbon footprint and recycling the
waste streams as much as possible. Since our campus operations,
like our own personal lifestyles, consume natural resources, we
should remember, "Treat the Earth well. It was not given to you by
your parents. It was loaned to you by your children." (Kenyan
Proverb).
