St. John’s University’s 19th Annual Founder’s Week Celebration

St. John’s University will hold its 19th annual Founder’s Week celebration September 23-29, 2012. Followers of St. Vincent de Paul are seeking the common good for all and especially for persons who live in poverty or under oppression. St. Vincent's efforts offer a practical approach to living the truth about human dignity. This year’s Founder’s Week theme, “Be Vincentian: Faith-filled Citizens,” will emphasize the idea of civic responsibilities and practices of virtues of faith and solidarity. 

The following will be honored with prestigious awards at the Vincentian Convocation on Thursday, September 27, 2012 at St. Thomas More Church for their service and devotion to the University’s Mission, as exemplified by the works of St. Vincent de Paul.

  • Vincentian Mission Award:Konrad Timothy Tuchscherer, Jr. Ph.D.Associate Professor, Director of Africana Studies, St. John's University
  • St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Medal : Eileen Donnelly Alexanderson ‘79CBA,Manager, Black Family Partners
  • St. Vincent de Paul Medal : John R. Bender ‘86SVC, ‘88CBA,President and Chief Operating Officer, Global Reinsurance Company and Founder and Member, Board of Directors, St. Baldrick’s Foundation
  • Frederic Ozanam Award: Sr. Catherine Feeney, SSND, Executive Director, School Sisters of Notre Dame Educational Center, Inc
  • President’s Medal : Emelinda Nunez-Afiz,Office Manager and HR Director, St. John’s Bread of Life
  • Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters: Sister Louise Gallahue, D.C., Visitatrix, Daughters of Charity, Province of St. Louise
  • Degree of Doctor of Sacred Theology: Rev. John Prager, C.M., Director, Daughters of Charity, Province of Ecuador

Centered on the theme of civic responsibility, Founder’s Week concludes with the 11th Annual University Service Day on Saturday, September 29. More than 1,000 students, faculty and administrators join together and serve communities locally and abroad. Other Founder’s Week events include:

  • Sunday, September 23–29:Week-long Library Exhibit “The Immigrant Church in New York,”
    St. Augustine Hall, 4th Floor
  • Tuesday, September 25: “The Way,” An acclaimed film of a historical pilgrimage directed by Emilio Estevez and starring Martin Sheen with a faculty led discussion following, D’Angelo Center
  • Thursday, September 27:Vincentian Convocation, St. Thomas More Church
  • Saturday, September 29: University Service Day, Opening Ceremonies Queens Taffner Field House
