Meet the Dean: Jerrold Ross — Informal Conversations with the Deans of St. John's University

May 15, 2012

Jerrold Ross, Ph.D., Dean of The School of Education (SOE) since 1995 and Academic Vice President of the Staten Island campus, was born in Brooklyn. He is a staunch New Yorker who is enthusiastic about working on both the Queens and the Staten Island campuses.

What was your first career aspiration?

I always wanted to teach. When I was a senior at the High School of Music and Art in Manhattan, Juilliard offered me a scholarship to study piano, while NYU offered me one for education. Although, I was tempted by the opportunity to train with the great pianist Rosalyn Tureck, I decided to go to NYU.  I am convinced this choice benefitted both professions.

Do you remember your first day at St. John’s?

I arrived at Marillac Hall, where The School of Education (SOE) was then located. As I walked down the aisle to my office, I saw rows of secretaries seated at desks close together, surrounded by filing cabinets. The scene reminded me of a factory, provoking me to say, “where are the sewing machines?”

One of my first priorities was to improve the SOE’s working conditions and six years later, we moved to a building designed to fit our needs.

St. John's
School of Law Welcomes Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia

April 19, 2012

St. Johns University

On April 2-3, 2012, the Law School welcomed United States Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia to campus.

The visit began on Monday afternoon with Justice Scalia’s participation in the Colloquium on Law and Religion, an innovative new seminar directed by Professors Mark L. Movsesian and Marc O. DeGirolami of the Law School’s Center for Law and Religion. The Colloquium brings leading law and religion scholars to campus to discuss their work with selected students. The students prepare short analytical papers in response to the scholars’ writings and then engage the scholars in class. Justice Scalia spoke about several of the Court’s recent religion clause cases and fielded questions on subjects like the original meaning of the religion clauses, the effectiveness of history as a check on the Court and the balance the Constitution strikes between public religiosity and minority rights. “I came to law school excited about the opportunity to debate constitutional law with my classmates,” said Yosefa Heber, one of the students in the Colloquium. “I never imagined that I would get the opportunity to discuss the cases with one of the Justices himself. It was fascinating to hear Justice Scalia express his views on the meaning of the religion clauses and respond to student questions and criticisms of his approach.” Professor Movsesian added: “I was so proud of our students. They asked great, thoughtful questions and were ready when the Justice came back with some of his own. The Justice remarked to me afterwards how impressed he was with the students’ abilities.”

St. John's Named to President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll — with Distinction

April 13, 2012

St. Johns University

Recognized for its commitment to assisting communities and people in need, St. John’s is one of only 110 American colleges and universities admitted with distinction to the 2012  President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.

The Honor Roll annually commends colleges and universities that demonstrate leadership in promoting student, faculty and staff participation in volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement with “measurable outcomes.” The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), part of the U.S. government’s Office of the Inspector General, launched this program in 2006.

This is St. John’s sixth straight year on the Honor Roll — its first with distinction. “It’s a wonderful, external validation of the mission-centered focus of our faculty, students and administrators,” said Rev. James J. Maher, C.M., Executive Vice President for Mission and Student Services. “They are all to be congratulated for advancing the University’s values through volunteering, teaching and community-based research.”

Art and Faith Empower us to “Allay Doubt,” Says Prize-Winning Author

April 13, 2012

St. Johns University

Author Alice McDermott sees a strong connection between struggling with her Catholic faith and the creative process. “Neither one guarantees success,” she observed recently. “They strive to apprehend some perfection that we suspect is unattainable, but which we seek to achieve.”

McDermott expanded on that theme in “Faith and Literature,” a lecture she delivered to nearly 150 students, faculty, alumni and friends at St. John’s University’s Queens campus on April 2. McDermott also will speak on the same topic at 7 p.m. on April 16 at the Staten Island campus.

A three-time Pulitzer Prize finalist and 1998 National Book Award winner, McDermott currently holds the 2012 Peter and Margaret D’Angelo Endowed Chair for the Humanities in St. John’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Meet the Dean: Jeffrey Fagen

A series of informal conversations with the Deans of St. John's University

March 29, 2012

St. Johns University

Jeffrey Fagen, Ph.D., Dean of St. John’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was raised in Brooklyn, NY. He joined the Psychology faculty at St. John’s in 1981 and became Dean in 2000.

What was your first career aspiration?
As a teenager, my hobby was operating ham radios, so I was really into electronics. I had a huge antenna on my parents’ roof and I built my own transmitter. I would talk to people all over the world and I would spend hours doing it. So initially, I thought I wanted to be an electrical engineer.

I graduated from high school and went to engineering school at City College (CCNY) and quickly realized that I didn’t like it. I didn’t know what I wanted to do, so I became an “undecided” sophomore. Then, I discovered psychology and fell in love with it.

Do you remember your first day at St. John’s?
It was 1981, and what I remember most is that they didn’t have an office for me yet. I had all these boxes of books in the trunk of my car and no place to put them. It was the same year that Bent Hall opened, so they finally found some space for me in St. John Hall where the College of Business Administration (now The Peter J. Tobin College of Business) had been. I did a little snooping around and found a much bigger office and grabbed it. I think it had been a department chair’s office.

Despite Early Lead, St. John's Falls to Duke 74-47 in Sweet 16

March 26, 2012

St. Johns University

“What you created here is magic,” Head Coach Kim Barnes Arico told St. John’s University’s women’s basketball team before their first-ever Sweet 16 game on March 24. “Let’s keep it going.”

Despite a record-breaking season that drew national attention, the Red Storm’s magic did not prevail against No. 2 Duke. St. John’s fell to the Blue Devils by a score of 74-47 in Fresno, CA.

The Red Storm scored the first bucket and maintained an early lead. But they lost momentum by the end of the first half. With five points and two assists by Duke’s senior guard Shay Selby, the taller Blue Devils were 13 points ahead early in the second half, quickly working their way to a 20-point lead.

Expressing pride in “the best season for our program in its history,” Coach Barnes Arico said Duke “played exceptionally well” and wished the Blue Devils success as they move forward to the Elite Eight.

Morocco Visit Adds New Dimension to St. John's Paris Semester This Fall

March 16, 2012

St. Johns University

Students can experience life and learning in France and North Africa this fall through a pilot program that adds several days in historic Morocco to the popular Discover France semester at St. John’s University’s Paris location.

Based at St. John’s residential academic center in Paris, Discover France — part of the University’s wide-ranging Global Studies offerings — immerses students in the city’s history and culture. They earn up to 15 credits while studying French art, architecture, language and politics. Students also engage in service activities and visit other urban and rural sites.

Adding Morocco to the itinerary exposes students to an ancient culture with enduring ties to France, said Tina Chen, Ph.D., Associate Director of the Paris location and a Professor there. “They are linked by history, culture and language,” said Dr. Chen. Today, she observed, Muslims from North Africa are a growing minority in and around many French cities.

Although the program is always in demand, Morocco has boosted interest, said Matthew Pucciarelli, Associate Vice President of Global Studies. “Students already are asking about it,” he said. “So now is the time to apply for this fall.” Students at other colleges and universities also may apply.

"Fresh Five" Star Earns BIG EAST Rookie of the Year Honors

March 8, 2012

St. Johns University

Recognized as the driving force behind a St. John’s men’s basketball team that fielded five freshmen as starters, forward/guard Moe Harkless was named 2011-12 BIG EAST Rookie of the Year on March 6.

The 6-8 swingman is the second St. John's player to earn this distinction. David Russell took home the honor in the 1979-80 season.

En route to winning the award, Harkless averaged 15.2 points per game, ranking him second in the conference and ninth in the nation among rookies. His 8.6 boards per game were strong enough to give him a share of the top spot for rebounds among first-year players in the BIG EAST. During his historic season, he amassed a total of 472 points.

"The BIG EAST Rookie of the Year award is a great honor for Moe and our program," said Head Coach Steve Lavin. "Because Moe is a product of New York City, it was fitting that he received the award at legendary Madison Square Garden with his family and teammates in attendance. We are proud of what Moe and our young group accomplished this season."

Every dream is within reach, more than 800 St. John’s students learned when the cast of MTV’s “The Buried Life” came to the Queens campus on February 15.

The stars of the wildly successful series came to St. John’s as part of “The Buried Life Mega Tour,” a cross-country trip based on the show’s premise: cast members slashing items from their personal “bucket lists” while helping complete strangers to fulfill their own goals. The Department of Student Life and Student Government co-sponsored the event.

“After listening to the cast speak, I was inspired to create a bucket list myself,” said Farrell Thomas ’13C, who was among the students gathered in Carnesecca Arena. “Whether it involves helping others or accomplishing something I’ve always wanted to do, I will make a point of doing it before it’s too late.”

The tour takes the show to different colleges and universities chosen in a nationwide contest. St. John’s was among the winners. The first 200 students to arrive at Carnesecca Arena were invited to a special meet-and-greet with the cast after the event.
