Queens Campus Is Transformed into Carnival as Students Come Together at Semester’s Close

April 25, 2008

Students celebrated the end of the spring semester by enjoying rides, games and friendship on the Great Lawn of the Queens campus of St. John’s University as the University community gathered for the annual Spring Fling event. Students enjoyed the full St. John’s experience on April 25, 2008, as they took advantage of free rides such as the Ferris Wheel, Giant Fun Slide, Customized T-shirt booth and food and prize giveaway tables.

Spring Fling was the kickoff to St. John’s Spring Week, a weeklong celebration on the Queens campus featuring many activities and events that encourage St. John’s students to relax and enjoy the ending of another school year. “This is a really fun idea. It makes me feel special being a student here at St. John’s” said Tiasia Currie, a freshman in St. John’s College.

The celebration is sponsored each year by the Student Programming Board and Residence Hall Association, with the support of the Office of Campus Activities. Some of the events of the week included the Fierce Spring Fashion Show sponsored by the Fashion, Advertising, and Earth Clubs. Hosted by Bravo TV’s “Project Runway” contestant Mychael Knight, the event, complete with a Bryant Park-inspired runway and couture-like designs, was held on Thursday, April 24, in Carnesecca Arena with great success as over 2,000 students and their guests attended.

The week ended on Friday, April 25, with the spring concert, Radio Ready, which was free for all St. John’s students and which featured R&B recording artist Keyshia Cole, and reggae artists Notch and Mr. Vegas.

St. John’s has a strong commitment to ensuring students enjoy high quality campus life, as well as academics and provides students many opportunities, like Spring Fling, to enjoy what being a college student is all about.
