Men's GolfThe St. John's University men's golf team finished eighth at the Temple Invitational, being held at Glenmaura Golf Course in Scranton, PA. October 4-5. The Red Storm carded a two-round score of 638, four strokes back of seventh place Temple. Penn State won the event with a 597. St. John's was led by freshman Joe Yastrub who tied for 17th place at 14-over par 156.
Sophomore Brian McArdle tied for 22nd with a 16-over par 158, while freshman John Stoltz finished tied for 30th at 18-over par 160. Junior Ian Middelton tied for 44th at 22-over par 164 to round out the scoring for the Red Storm.
Women's Tennis
The St. John's University women's tennis team competed October 4-5 at the Eastern Collegiate Invitational held at the United States Military Academy in West Point. Junior Kristina Bothova took home the No. 3 singles bracket title, while classmate Allison Davidson fell in the finals.
In the No. 3 singles bracket, Bothova was the first seed in the bracket going into the tournament and lived up to the seed, taking home the title with a 6-0, 3-6, 11-9 victory over Quinnipiac's Danielle Rautenberg in the finals. In Saturday's semi and quarterfinal matches, she downed Connecticut's Allison Adamski, 6-2, 7-6 (2) and Lauren Conching of Stony Brook, 6-0, 6-2.
Davidson entered the tournament in the No. 2 singles bracket and upset the bracket's first and fourth seeds on her way to the championship. In the finals on Sunday, she battled with Lindy First of George Washington, the bracket's No. 2 seed, in a hard fought three set match, 2-6, 7-6, 6-10. On Saturday, Davidson won both matches in straight sets, facing the bracket's No. 1 seed, Sasha Edelstein of Massachusetts in the semifinals and Rutgers' Ketevan Shmakova, the bracket's fourth seed in the quarterfinals.
Women's Golf
The St. John's women's golf team finished fifth at the Yale Invitational, hosted October 4-5 by Yale University in New Haven. The Red Storm carded a two round team score of 648, finishing behind Princeton, Yale, Rollins and Boston College.
St. John's was led by junior Jaclyn Sanders who took a share of the lead in to the final round after carding an opening round three-over par 73. Sanders closed out the event with an 11-over par 81, finishing in a three-way tie for seventh place at 14-over par 154.
Men's Soccer
St. John's Men's Soccer Coach Dave Masur stresses to his team that they need to keep things simple. It's easy to get caught up in the emotion of the game and let that take over, but in keeping things simple, you give your team a better chance to win. St. John's senior Simone Salinno has taken those words to heart this season. The Italian scored his team-leading ninth goal of the season, and second of the weekend, and helped lead the 14th-ranked Red Storm men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over San Diego State in second round action of the Rutgers Classic at Yurcak Field.
The Red Storm won both games at the Rutgers Classic October 5, including a 3-0 win over St. Mary's on Friday night. Salinno scored two goals, while Matt Groenwald assisted on all four goals. Combined with host Rutgers' 2-1 double overtime loss to St. Mary's the Red Storm won the Rutgers Classic. Groenwald was named the Offensive Most Valuable Player of the Tournament, while Chris Wingert earned Defensive MVP honors. Salinno and O'Neill were each named to the All-Tournament team.
The wins improve St. John's record to 8-3-1 overall.
