The G.O.L.D. Event for The School of
Education left a major mark on the Alumni, graduate and
undergraduate students of St. John’s University. It was the first
occasion ever to bring past and present organization members
together for a reunion dinner. (
Kappa Delta Pi,
Education Society and
Dean’s Scholars.)

With a cast member from the Broadway play The 25th Annual Putnam
County Spelling Bee, and Alumni Relations heading the event it
proved to be a night to remember. The room was filled with
laughter and excitement throughout the night. Deborah S.
Craig, one of the cast members of the 25th Annual Putnam County
Spelling Bee truly out did herself as she mixed and mingled with
the crowd making herself a part of the St. John's University
family.
Her personality was truly stunning and her performance was
delightful. As Deborah performed, she reminded us to always look at
life almost through a mirror and never take it for granted. She
also made it very clear that teaching children is a gift, but
assisting them in using that gift takes a special person and many
special people seemed to be in attendance on September 26, 2005 in
Council Hall.
Her performance and speech reflected upon what every child
growing up goes through. We are always trying to be creative and
different but sometimes we as adults almost over look young people
and young people’s talent. Her main message was to teach
children that winning isn’t everything and that losing doesn’t
necessarily make you a loser. Making a difference is what we are
all trying to accomplish and we will continue with the support of
our families and friends. We continue to live the mission that St.
John’s University has established.
Overall we can say that the night was a true success and
Deborah’s message will always remain with us.
The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling
Bee
The musical Spelling Bee is conceived by Rebecca Feldman and with a
book by Rachel Sheinkin and a score by William Finn - has remained
virtually unchanged at the material level. It follows the
spelling-influenced adventures of six wacky kids, thrust into the
bee spotlight at a time in their lives when they're still trying to
figure out exactly who they are and what they want from life. That
each is somewhat ostracized from normality (as they see it), and as
they're under the harsh eye and apparently unforgiving voice of a
spelling announcer consigned to being as helpfully unhelpful as
possible, only increases the stakes. Their futures really do seem
to be on the line.
