Men's SoccerAfter losing their first two games the No. 12 ranked St. John’s University men’s soccer team came back to defeat Notre Dame, one of the best teams in the BIG EAST, and among the best nationally.
The Red Storm needed a win and their 3-0 victory over the fourth-ranked Fighting Irish on Sept. 7 tasted much sweeter because it came against a tough BIG EAST rival. The Red Storm, the preseason favorites in the BIG EAST, improves to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the league, while Notre Dame falls to 1-1-1 and 0-1.
Women's Soccer
A trio of career-first goals lifted the Red Storm women's soccer team to a 3-2 win over Siena Sept. 7, and snapped a three-game losing streak for St. John's. Erin Henderson, Natasha Lee and Mallory DiMaio each knocked in the first goal of their respective careers to lead the Red Storm to their first win of the season.
Henderson opened up the scoring in the game at the 14:44 mark of the first half. Kaitlin Schmidt fed the ball from the left side of the field, across the mouth of the goal, to Henderson breaking on the right side. The sophomore blasted the ball to the lower left corner of the net, tallying the Red Storm's first goal of the season and the first of her career. Gabriela Franco finished with five saves for St. John's, and recorded the first win of her career.
Women's Volleyball
The St. John's volleyball split a doubleheader today at the final day of the Holiday Inn Express Tournament played in Stony Brook Sept. 6. In the first match, Long Island University defeated the Red Storm, 3-1 (29-31, 30-24, 27-30, 26-30), while in the nightcap St. John's topped Canisius, 3-0 (30-28, 30-17, 30-25). The Red Storm's record stands at 5-2 on the season.
