Student vs. Faculty Basketball Game

Scores of fans filled Carnesecca Arena for the second annual Student vs. Faculty Basketball Game benefitting Autism Speaks and Give Kids the World Village. Organized by The School of Education, Athletics, Student Government Inc., Kappa Delta Pi and Student Engagement, the high-scoring game featured countless lead changes and a lively halftime show.

Faculty started the game strong, dominating the court on both offense and defense. Kelvin Sage ’13Ed, a standout on the student team, was impressed with the faculty’s skill and poise. “The faculty team looks better than last year. Hopefully, they won’t hold any grudges,” he said with a smile. “One of my teachers is playing out there — I hope he doesn’t fail me!”

While the faculty held a commanding lead throughout most of the first half, the students rallied and mounted an impressive comeback to overcome the faculty and take the lead 34-33 at the half. Halftime featured a wide range of dance, cheer and step teams, a musical performance and free t-shirts that were tossed into the stands.

Asha Scott, a spectator and member of Haraya, enjoyed the game and the halftime festivities and was happy to lend her support to two very worthy causes. “I came with my fellow Haraya members to support Autism Speaks and Give Kids the World,” she said. “I enjoyed myself.”

The second half of the game was filled with ups and downs for both teams, with faculty coming out on top thanks to a last minute shot that gave them the a 70-68 edge.

While the faculty won the game, the real winners were Autism Speaks and Give Kids the World. Proceeds from the game were donated to both organizations. Autism Speaks is the nation's largest autism science and advocacy organization, dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a cure for autism. Give Kids the World, is a non-profit organization that fulfills the wish of children with life-threatening illnesses and their families to enjoy a memorable, cost-free visit to one of the famous Central Florida attractions .

Kelvin was happy to do his part to raise awareness for the two charitable organizations and get involved on the Queens campus. “I got to meet people from all around the University and help out those in need.”
