St. John's University Sponsors Computer Workshop for Staten Island Adults

June 18, 2008

The Office of Community Relations of St. John’s University, together with the Staten Island Office of Student Life, sponsored its fourth annual Adult Computer Workshop in early June. The four day workshop, which was made possible by a grant from New York State Senator and STJ Alumnus, Andrew Lanza, was available free of charge to adults over the age of 50. St. John’s Staten Island Campus student orientation leaders led the classes, and topics included e-mail, online shopping, research and word processing to encourage adults in this class to brush up on their computer skills. The students were selected based on academic excellence and leadership qualities.

Three individual classes were offered on the Staten Island campus: beginners, intermediate and advanced. These three levels of instruction allowed STJ student-instructors to serve all the participants, according to their familiarity with computers. Some of the attendees learned how to “Google” and surf the Internet while others learned how to download and organize digital photos of their grandchildren or buy and sell on EBay. In addition, Microsoft Word Processing, internet activities such as banking, bill payments and general internet searches for travel, weather and news were all included in the class curriculum.

“I want to thank St. John’s University for giving adults/seniors the opportunity to stay updated on advancing computer technologies,” said one class attendee. “The student instructors are well prepared, knowledgeable, courteous and very patient with us.  I also learned many short cuts that will help me a great deal in the future. The training lab has state-of-the-art equipment that we were able to utilize which is a great resource the University has offered to members of the Staten Island community.”

The workshop, as well as a future concert at the Staten Island campus of St. John’s University, was made possible through a state grant.

“It is due to the support of the State of New York and a special member item that our adults on Staten Island have benefited from such a grant,” said Joseph Sciame, St. John’s University Vice President for Community Relations. “Moreover, the combination of funding and student participation was a wonderful reflection of resources, both financial and human.  Indeed, we are proud of our students!”
