St. John's University Hosts Attempt to Build World's Largest PB&J Sandwich
September 24, 2002
Jamaica, NY -
With more than 450 pounds of creamy peanut butter and grape jelly
and 81 square feet of bread, Bill Corrigan, a St. John's University
MBA student, completed his attempt to break the Guinness Book of
World Records record for making the world's largest peanut butter
and jelly sandwich. The feat took place on the nationally televised
"TODAY" Show, broadcast live from Council Hall on the Queens
campus, and raised $2,500 for the Bread and Life Soup Kitchen in
Bedford-Stuyvesant, New York.
Corrigan, an alumnus of St. John's and a current student in the
Peter J. Tobin College of Business MBA program, was joined by
approximately 25 of his friends, classmates and family (including
his wife, Laura and 4 month old daughter Kaitlyn) to promote
volunteerism and encourage others to perform more selfless acts.
The final constructed sandwich measured 9 feet by 8 feet. The
leftover ingredients peanut butter, jelly and bread were also
donated to the Soup Kitchen.
The evidence of today's event, including sandwich measurements,
pictures and video, will be sent to the Guinness Book of World's
Records for evaluation and hopeful acceptance. Bill says he expects
to hear back in a few weeks.
The grape jelly and peanut butter were donated by the J. M. Smucker
Company and JIF, respectively, while King Kullen, in conjunction
with Caravan Products, donated the bread. Members of the St, John's
Bread and Life Program and the peanut butter and jelly sandwich
makers were also on hand.
