The 20th annual Sun Yat-Sen lecture series is held. Distinguished scholars from Cornell, Duke and Penn State, as well as Chairman Jen-tai Tsai, advisor to the President of The Republic of China, speak to rapt audiences.

The 20th International Conference on Asian Affairs is held. The Chinese Communist Party’s reaction to changes created by its reform policies are the focus.

D. Kenneth Yen, President of the world renowned Yulon Group, honors St. John’s with a grant of $1,000,000 from the Vivian Wu Yen Business and Industry Development Foundation. The Center also receives the $300,000 Chiang Ching-Kuo Academic Grant, sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Republic of China.
