St. John’s newly named Office
of Global Studies has been expanded to become more
student-centered, providing country specialists and other support
services including travel advice and overseas medical insurance. By
making multiple study abroad options available, the University
encourages students to customize their own international education
experience. In addition to Discover the World, they can choose
to spend a
semester,
summer or
winter break studying in one of a growing list of countries.
Additions last year included Costa Rica, Puerto Rico and Africa.
All St. John’s global studies programs will similarly integrate
academics, travel, service and reflection.
St. John’s is changing the face of studying abroad in many ways.
A key element is making it affordable for all students, cultivating
in them an affinity for travel and designing a curriculum that
enables them to stay on track for graduation while taking courses
overseas. St. John’s goal is to increase the number of students who
study abroad 10-fold by 2012 to 1500.
