As we celebrate Founder’s Week 2008,
we look to deepen our understanding of the Vincentian mission of
St. John’s. This year we celebrate the unity of humankind and our
interdependence in the world. During the week, we seek to examine
our responsibility to love - “extending our hearts and minds to
nurture our own and the other’s good.”

Rev. Peter Le Jacq, M.M., M.D, ‘76C
Fr. Peter Le Jacq, M.D. graduated from St. John’s University in
1976 to pursue his childhood dream of becoming a priest-doctor in
Africa. After crossing many borders earning degrees in Biology,
Medicine and Theology, as well as certificates in Tropical Medicine
and In ternational Health and Swahili, he lives his dream as a
member of the Catholic Foreign Mission Society of America
(Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers). He is one of only about 100 Roman
Catholic priests worldwide who are also medical doctors. He has
served in clinical, academic, pastoral and administrative roles in
settings as small as a dispensary and as large as an 800 bed
tertiary hospital, and also as a consultant to Pope John Paul II on
matters related to AIDS in East Africa. His work has taken him to
Cambodia, Guatemala and Ireland and finally to East Africa.
Presently, he is helping to raise support for the Bugando
University College of Health Sciences (BUCHS) — the first Catholic
Medical School in Africa. The University is located on the shores
of Lake Victoria in Tanzania at the Bugando Medical Center where
Fr. Peter served in a range of roles since 1987, as part of a small
group of 10 doctors for a population of eight million people.
