RESIDENCE MINISTRY

Welcome Home!

As you prepare to move into the Residence Halls, isn't it great to know that you have so many people who care for you and want your St. John's experience to be Amazing!

In addition to your Residence Directors and Residence Assistants, you have  Resident Ministers to provide a pastoral presence in the halls and apartments as Campus Ministers live with you in the Residence Village and the Residential apartments on Staten Island.

While Campus Ministers  are always available by appointment throughout the week, we also offer night hours on the Queens campus where our doors are always open. From 7pm to Midnight, students are invited to visit their Campus Minister to engage in conversation.

On the Staten Island campus, the Resident Minister offers various programs to the resident community to get those same conversations going.  Appointments can be made with the Resident Minister to chat in the evenings.

Talk about your day, your classes, relationships, spirituality, favorite sports team, family, friends, life. We are here to walk with you through your college years, providing a listening ear and a helping hand.

Please feel free to contact any of the Residence Ministers to find out more about who we are and how we can help make this college experience a great one.

Residence Ministry Programming

Residence Ministers offer a variety of programs throughout the semester. Working closely with Residence Assistants, we provide mission-related programs to help you connect to who we are as a Catholic, Vincentian and Metropolitan University.

Ongoing Opportunities:

Queens Service:
-Midnight Runs: (2-4 times a week)
-St. Nick's Men's Shelter (1-2 times a week)
-Saturday Service Projects, led by Team RV
-University Service Day: Every September, students are invited to participate in University Service Day. Joining the STJ community, over a 1,000 volunteers serve across the world trying to make a difference.
-St. Nicholas Award-Toy Drive: Every November, Residence Halls compete to win the St. Nicholas award. Toys collected benefit the families of St. John the Baptist Parish in Brooklyn through Bread and Life's Sponsor a Family.

Queens Spirituality:
Every semester, at least one spirituality program is held in your Residence Hall. These include programs on Thanksgiving, prayer, meditations and our Vincentian heritage.

We also offer a a women's spirituality group, L.I.G.H.T. (Ladies in God's Hands Together).

Donovan Hall, Century Hall and Hollis Hall also feature prayer rooms that are available for students to find time to pray. Inquire about the prayer room schedule throughout the semester.

Mass is held Monday-Friday, at 8am and 12:15pm. On Sunday, we offer Mass at 11am and 5:30pm (Student Mass).

The Rosary is held every Monday at 8pm in St Thomas More Church.

Holy Hour is also offered monthly.

Queens Social Justice:
Residence Ministry also offers a variety of social justice programming. Please see the social justice page for more information.

Often, floors take on leadership with these programs. In recent years, residents have been the leading volunteers in our Pig Out for Poverty Campaign and Peace Week Efforts.

STATEN ISLAND
Staten Island Service:
-Midnight Runs (every other week)
-ESL (weekly)
-Weekend Service Projects (coordinated with your RAs)
-University Service Day: Every September, students are invited to participate in University Service Day. Joining the STJ community, over 250 volunteers on the SI campus alone serve trying to make a difference.
-Founder’s Week Service Day – Every January, a resident student team takes part in our day to assist agencies around Staten Island.
-H.O.P.E. (Homeless Outreach Population Estimate): Each January, a team of resident students heads out to help in NYC’s count of the homeless living on the street.

Staten Island Spirituality:
Every semester, at least one spirituality program is held for resident students. These include prayers on 9/11, workshops on values, or other group conversations about the important things in life.

Sunday nights are a chance to gear up for the week in prayer at our Sunday Night Mass at 6 PM on campus. All who attend Mass are offered free dinner afterward.

We offer a Bible study group called God’s Text Message where you can find (along with your friends) the message God is trying to send you! An added bonus: we make a home-cooked meal for each session, so come and share your favorite recipe, too!

Staten Island Social Justice:
Residence Ministry also offers a variety of social justice programming. Please see the social justice page for more information.

These are a few of the programs that Residence Ministry offers. Please contact any of your Residence Ministers for more information. We are always interested in hearing your feedback and your ideas so we can make a difference in the world.
