Difference Between Brothers and
Priests
A Vincentian brother and priest share the same bond in
community; both take vows, share prayer, community life, and
ministry together. However, brothers are called to ministries that
advance the kingdom of God in a different way than priests.
Brothers are engaged in many Vincentian ministries: parishes,
universities, and missions. They teach, write plays, promote parish
life, run corporations that aid the poor, do social work, work in
retreat centers – if God needs it, they do it! In each of these
settings, they infuse and enliven their ministry with the charism
and characteristic virtues of Saint Vincent.
Formation for Brother
Candidates
Brother candidates go through similar programs as priest
candidates. They have a formation period that includes the
novitiate year and some theological education. Brother candidates
receive formation for Vincentian community life and training
appropriate to their ministry. Brothers get Ph.D.’s in Theatre, or
MSWs, or train to be professional carpenters – whatever they need
to do the job well.
