Advisory Council Dr. Cynthia Cupit Swenson is currently an Associate Professor and the Associate Director of the Family Services Research Center Department of Psychiatry and Behavior Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina. She has licenses in both Clinical and School Psychology in the state of South Carolina. Dr. Swenson received both her B.A. and M.S. in Psychology from Northeast Louisiana University and her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Florida State University. Her clinical and research interests include the treatment of childhood trauma, youth, family, and community violence, and substance abuse. After receiving her doctoral degree, Dr. Swenson worked as an investigator on a number of federally funded research grants focusing on treatments and services for victims of childhood physical abuse. Her most resent research projects include a National Institute of Health funded grant titled Community-Based Treatment of Child Physical Abuse: Cost and Outcomes and an MST Group LLC funded project investigating the multisystemic treatment model in relation to child maltreatment. Dr. Swenson also conducts numerous workshops and participates in panels on the treatment of childhood physical abuse, the effectiveness of multisystemic therapy, and community violence. She has authored numerous journal publications, book chapters and training manuals on these topics as well. Dr. Swenson is a member of a number of professional organizations including the American Psychological Association, the International Society on the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect, the South Carolina Professional Society on the Abuse of Children and The International Association for the Treatment of Sexual Offenders. She also recently served on the Board of Directors of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children. Dr. Swenson is a reviewer for many peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of Clinical Child Psychology, Child Maltreatment and Child Abuse and Neglect among others. In addition to her professional obligations, Dr. Swenson volunteers for a number of community service organizations including People Against Rape, the Djole Dance Company, the Leukemia Society of America, and Happy Days and Special Times.
