Enhancing Student Learning through Archives and Special
Collections: A Librarian-Faculty Conversation
Blythe Roveland-Brenton, University Libraries
Claudia Sbrissa, St. John’s College of Liberal Arts and
Sciences
Increasingly, colleges and universities are promoting student use
of materials in their archives and special collections. The growing
trend of digitizing collections as well as emphasizing
undergraduate research has spurred the demand for active engagement
with unique archival and library materials. For a number of years,
the staff of Archives and Special Collections at St. John’s has
tried to cultivate student interaction with the University’s own
distinctive holdings. We work with faculty to hold
specially-tailored class sessions and mount exhibitions to
publicize some of the University’s treasures.
In this session, Blythe Roveland-Brenton and
Claudia Sbrissa discuss their own long-standing
collaborative project involving students in the Book Arts class.
The session will serve as an introduction to some of the unique
collections in the University’s Queens and Manhattan libraries, and
to initiatives and plans for the future. Participants are
en-couraged to brainstorm about the kinds of student projects and
assignments that could be developed to enhance student experiential
learning and develop skill sets. Following the discussion there
will be an opportunity to view an exhibition of student work from
the Book Arts class alongside the Special Collections books that
inspired them.
