The Institute for Core Studies is being established to enhance
service to our students during their crucial first two years of
undergraduate study. The Institute will consist of faculty who
teach primarily in three core specialties: Discover New York,
Composition, and Scientific Inquiry.
These faculty members will be able to earn programmatic tenure.
We expect a deep commitment to the University and its students, a
compelling interest in high quality teaching, an extraordinary
devotion to student learning both inside and outside of the
classroom, and caring service to students during their transition
into academic life.
The Institute will also explore the creation of a required
non-credit capstone course devoted to a student’s passage out of
the undergraduate years. The course, tentatively titled “Passages”
will have two types of sections, one for students transitioning
into the world of work and one for students transitioning into
graduate study. The course would be taken during the students’
final undergraduate year.
