Course Description: Discover New York (DNY
1000c) This course focuses on the issue of immigration and
its impact upon the economic, cultural, religious, and social
development of New York City. Students will explore the experiences
of immigrant groups arriving at Ellis Island during the late
nineteenth century, to more recent groups arriving through JFK
Airport. The course will also explore the mission and history of
St. John’s University, as well as examine issues designed to
enhance your transition to higher education. In terms of
experiential learning, students will regularly participate in
structured workshop activities designed to increase their awareness
of issues of diversity and their personal relevance to living,
learning and working in a global society. Moreover, with the
incorporation of Academic Service Learning, the city is experienced
by students as a place populated with real people, many of whom
live in difficult situations and need assistance.
