Sharon Marshall is an assistant professor who teaches First Year Writing and has taught Business Writing and Literature in a Global Context at St. John’s. She did her graduate work at Columbia University and The City College of the City University of New York and her undergraduate work at Vassar College. She holds a M.A. in English with concentrations in Creative Writing and Literature, including African-American and World Literature. For over eighteen years she has taught writing and methods for using writing to read to a great many undergraduate students.  She has led writing pedagogy workshops for teachers at diverse institutions. Her research interests include composition pedagogy, teacher development, student engagement, 21st century literacies, and Soka, or value-creating education. At the upcoming conference of the National Council of Teachers of English, she will  present strategies to help students read and engage with difficult texts.
