Our club brings like-minded individuals together in an environment where their creativity and love for poetry can be utilized. Members share thoughts, ingenuity and criticism to build a stable and organized community. Members are given an appropriate setting in which their imagination can be expressed. We hold Spoken word nights, Poetry workshops, Poetry Slams, Poetic Plays, Poetry Dinners, and we are currently working on a Food 4 Thought publication. St. John’s University: Annual Undergraduate Applied Social Justice Research Essay Competition

Watch for postings in the library and on the library's website.
Winning entries put the STJ library resources to work on topics of social justice. The deadline is early spring semester. Length can range from 5-12 pages.

The Torch
The Torch is the official student newspaper of St. John’s University. The Torch is produced solely by students of the University as a source of news for the St. John’s community, and a venue for the exchange of ideas amongst its students. All students of STJ are welcome to get involved in The Torch regardless of their year or previous levels of experience. Training is provided for all positions on the paper. The Torch serves as an optimal venue for students looking to pursue a career in journalism, publishing, photography, business, art or writing. 

The Vanguard

The Honors Program publishes an annual journal, The Vanguard, which enables honors students to have research-oriented or creative work published. We welcome submissions from all honors students - be they scholarly research papers (from any field of study) or different forms of creative writing (essays, poetry, etc.) Check deadlines on the website; submissions should be e-mailed as Word document attachments to thevanguardjournal@gmail.com. Note: First preference goes to members of the Honors Program, but the editors are happy to consider all submissions.

 

LOCAL OPPORTUNITIES

Bowery Poetry Club (Manhattan)
From the New York Times: The Bowery Poetry Club hosts raucous literary evenings in the style of the legendary Bowery of old, a street which was historically all flophouses and whiskey joints. Behind the sound booth, the Art Wall hosts changing exhibitions; at the bar, cocktail ingredients are written out in poem format. Check the schedule for poetry slams, film screenings and bingo nights.

Langston Hughes Library (Queens)

Moth: Stories Told (Manhattan) 
This not-for-profit organization celebrates the art of storytelling and hosts events, both in Manhattan and Chicago. Their events include opportunities to hear stories told, StorySLAM competition, outreach programs, and an annual gala.

New York University Reading Series (Manhattan)
The lively public Reading Series exposes students and readers to a wide array of writers, translators, editors and poets, and connects our program to the local community.

Nuyorican Poets Cafe (Manhattan)
A non-profit organization, the Cafe has emerged as one of the country's most highly respected arts organizations and has become an acclaimed forum for innovative poetry, music, hip hop, video, visual arts, comedy and theatre. The mission of the Cafe is to create a multi-cultural venue that both nurtures artists and exhibits a variety of artistic works. 

Poets House (Manhattan)
Poets House is a national poetry library and literary center that invites poets and the public to step into the living tradition of poetry  Each year they present over 200 public programs, including panels, lectures, readings, writing workshops and walking tours in New York City and nationwide. Panel discussions and lectures link the voices of poets living today to a vast literary tradition. Poets House readings presented in public parks and libraries cultivate a wider audience for the art. Innovative seminars and workshops taught by emerging and established poets offer aficionados and first-timers an opportunity to explore the writing process in greater depth.. 

St. Mark's Poetry Project (Manhattan)
Through its live programming, workshops, publications, website and special events, The Poetry Project promotes, fosters and inspires the reading and writing of contemporary poetry by (a) presenting contemporary poetry to diverse audiences, (b) increasing public recognition, awareness and appreciation of poetry and other arts, (c) providing a community setting in which poets and artists can exchange ideas and information, and (d) encouraging the participation and development of new poets from a broad range of styles.

Terraza 7 Train Cafe (Queens)
Located in the heart of Queens, NY – directly between Elmhurst and Jackson Heights – two locations containing the most diverse population of working class immigrants on the planet- Terraza Café is committed to preserving and promoting all local artistic and political expressions within the community. Through drinks, art, live music, workshops, community and political partnerships, owner and active community member Freddy Castiblanco builds an intercultural bridge (and an amazing stage and 2nd floor balcony) offering the opportunity for a cultural experiment that lets us have a better understanding of the human complexity, cultural diversity, creativity, solidarity and respect for the difference

American Journal of Undergraduate Research (math and sciences)
A refereed journal for undergraduate research in the pure and applied sciences, mathematics, engineering, technology, and related areas in education.

Blood Lotus
Self-described as,  “An online literary quarterly run by editors who refuse to believe everything has already been written, and who want to promote your best writing as proof,” Blood Lotusseeks submissions from new and already-published authors who have unique voices and visions. They accept poetry, fiction (less than 4,500 words), “gray area” work, and visual art.

Issues in Political Economy (economics)
Issues in Political Economy is committed to supporting and encouraging quality undergraduate research in all areas of economics. Issues in Political Economy is edited and refereed entirely by students, with oversight from faculty at the University of Mary Washington and Elon University. In order to maintain quality and objectivity, we follow a double-blind review process. The only requirements for submission are that the article pertains to some aspect of economics, that it was written during undergraduate study, and that it be submitted through a faculty sponsor. Though submissions on all topics in economics will receive consideration, papers should be analytical and seek to add new understanding to the topic.

Journal of Undergraduate Research in Physics (physics)
JURP is a peer-reviewed journal of the Society of Physics Students (SPS) for archiving research conducted by undergraduate physicists. Papers in experimental physics, theoretical physics, or educational research in physics are welcome. Whether you performed cutting-edge research that led to new discoveries, cultivated insights that deepen our appreciation of well-established physics, or asked serious questions about physics education, you have something original to contribute to the ongoing conversation about physics.  The research must have been performed while the student authors were undergraduates, although the paper may be submitted soon after graduation. The primary authors of papers submitted to JURP should be the undergraduates who conducted the work, but faculty mentors are encouraged to be listed as co-authors if their contributions merit such acknowledgment.

Journal of Undergraduate Sciences (sciences)
JUS welcomes submissions from any student at the undergraduate level who is engaged in research in any scientific or science-related discipline. 

Journal of Young Investigators (sciences)
The Journal of Young Investigators (JYI) is an exciting student-led initiative to broaden the scope of the undergraduate scientific experience. JYI provides opportunities for students to participate in the scientific review and publication processes, primarily through the operation of its peer-reviewed journal for undergraduates. Incorporated as a non-profit, student-run corporation, JYI's staff members currently represent over 30 different academic institutions. 

Learning & Teaching: The International Journal of Higher Education in the Social Sciences (higher education)
LATISSinvites teachers and students to submit work that “reflects critically on learning and teaching in the changing context of higher education.”

National Conferences on Undergraduate Research (academic presentations)
The National Conferences on Undergraduate Research (NCUR), established in 1987, is dedicated to promoting undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative activity in all fields of study by sponsoring an annual conference for students. Unlike meetings of academic professional organizations, this gathering of young scholars welcomes presenters from all institutions of higher learning and from all corners of the academic curriculum.

Pennsylvania Literary Journal (creative writing)
Pennsylvania Literary Journal seeks submissions of poetry, short fiction, non-fiction, book reviews, and interviews. According to their submission guidelines, “All content should be appropriate for a reasoning, academic audience.” They also give editorial advice on all pieces, and state that those unwilling to consider criticism would be best off not submitting their work. Uses MLA style manual guidelines.

Undergraduate Research Journal for Human Sciences (human sciences)
The URC Undergraduate Research Journalis an annual online national, reviewed journal dedicated to the publication of undergraduate student research. The twofold purpose of the journal is to foster and reward the scholarly efforts of undergraduate human sciences students as well as to provide a valuable learning experience. The articles represent primarily the work of the undergraduate student(s). 

 

NATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES: University Publications

Alleghany Review, Alleghany College  (creative writing)
A nation-wide undergraduate literary journal. Also awards $250 prize to the winner of the Alleghany Review Literature Award in the categories of poetry and prose. Requires a $5 submission fee, which includes a one-year subscription.

American Journal of Undergraduate Research, University of Northern Iowa (science,  mathematics)
AJUR accepts undergraduate research in the pure and applied sciences, mathematics, engineering, technology, and related areas in education.

Aporia, Student Journal of Philosophy, Brighman Young University (philosophy)
An undergraduate philosophy journal that is published twice a year: an online edition in the fall and a print publication in the spring. They welcome well-written, undergraduate papers on any philosophical topic.  Authors must be undergraduates during the semester of publication 

Bellingham Review, Western Washington University (creative writing)
Western Washington University’s Bellingham Reviewis an undergraduate literary magazine. They accept submissions of poems, stories, and essays between September 15 and December 15 of each year.             

Black Warrior Review, University of Alabama (creative writing)
BWR accepts poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction written by new and established voices. Submissions are read year round.

Collision, University of Pittsburg (creative writing)
Collision is an undergraduate literary magazine dedicated to creative non-fiction and non-fiction poetry, including (but not limited to) narratives, travel writing, and profiles. The magazine also accepts photography. Submissions from students across the globe are considered.

The Dialectics: Journal of Leadership, Politics, and Society, Penn State University (politics, global Issues)
The Dialecticsseeks submissions that “identify significant societal and global issues, and offer creative solutions or specific recommendations for addressing the challenges.” Submissions should be written in accordance with the APA style guide.

The Dualist, Stanford University (philosophy)
The Dualist is a national undergraduate philosophy journal published by Stanford University undergraduates. Its purpose is to offer students an opportunity to participate in a normally inaccessible part of academic life -- the production and publication of papers for general philosophical readership. Established in 1993, The Dualist has since become the most renowned and prestigious undergraduate philosophy journal in the U.S., featuring thoughtful articles authored by undergraduates around the world.  Each year, The Dualist publishes quality undergraduate papers in philosophy. 

Euphony, University of Chicago (creative writing)
Euphony is the University of Chicago’s literary magazine. Pieces you will find between its covers include poetry, plays, stories, creative non-fiction, essays, and reviews.

Furman University Electronic Journal of Undergraduate Mathematics, Furman University (mathematics)
The Journal accepts papers of significant mathematical interest written by students containing work done prior to the students' obtaining a Bachelor's degree. Papers of all types will be considered, including technical, historical, and expository papers. Typically, papers will have been written as part of a summer research experience or school project. Any paper submitted by an undergraduate must have the approval of a sponsor, a full-time faculty member willing to endorse the student's work. The sponsor is largely responsible for ensuring the quality and veracity of the student's work. The sponsor's name and school will appear with the paper along with the student's name.

Hayden’s Ferry Review, University of Arizona (creative writing, visual art
An ambitious undergraduate literary magazine, Hayden’s Ferry Reviewdefines its mission as seeking “to be considered one of the prominent journals in the international literary community” and seeks to publish creative writing and visual art by promising emerging writers, as well as works by already established voices.

International Journal of Excellence in Undergraduate Research, Rice University (sciences)
The Catalyst: Rice Undergraduate Science and Engineering Review is a peer-edited, faculty-reviewed publication dedicated to fostering discussion of the sciences at Rice University. Submissions for reviews will be accepted from undergraduate students who have performed science or engineering research at any international university or research institution laboratory.

intersections: A Quarterly Journal of the Comparative History of Ideas, University of Washington (multidisciplinary)
Accepts undergraduate research and essays dealing with Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. 

McGill Journal of Medicine, McGill University (medicine)
The MJM is an acclaimed peer-reviewed journal that publishes student-authored work related to medicine. Graduate students, undergrads and medical students are invited to share their work with a broad international audience. 

Michigan Journal of Political Science, University of Michigan (political science, history, economics)
The Michigan Journal of Political Scienceaccepts submissions from undergraduate students attending accredited universities worldwide. (The Journal does accept submissions from graduate students; however, these papers must have been written as an undergraduate). The Journal publishes high-quality submissions in the disciplines of Political Science, History, and/or Political Economy, including those focusing on statistical analysis. Articles of all viewpoints are welcomed and evaluated based upon academic merit. 

Mosaic Art & Literary Journal, UC Riverside (creative writing/visual arts)
Mosiac accepts the following submissions: Poetry, Fiction, Non-fiction, Short Plays, and Visual Art.

The North Central Review, North Central College (creative writing, artwork, mixed genre)
The North Central Review is one of only a handful of literary journals publishing exclusively the writings and works of undergraduate students. The North Central Review considers all genres, including short fiction, poetry, drama, creative nonfiction, artwork, and mixed genre pieces 

Plain China, Bennington College (creative writing, artwork)
Plain China is a national, online lit­er­ary anthol­ogy showcasing the best under­grad­u­ate writ­ing from across the coun­try, while also pro­vid­ing a venue for top-notch art­work

Pomona Valley Review, Cal Poly Pomona
Pomona Valley Review, an online bi-annual liberal arts journal, publishes short fiction, poetry, art, and academic essays. Considers all unsolicited manuscripts, and seeks “new, original, and provocative work which challenges traditional literary paradigms.” Uses email submissions.            

Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Undergraduate Math Journal, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (mathematics)
The Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal is devoted entirely to papers written by undergraduates on topics related to mathematics. Although the authors need not be undergraduates at the time of submission or publication, the work must have been completed before graduation. The journal will be distributed freely in an electronic format (PDF) from the journal's web site. In order to maintain a high level of exposition, each paper must be sponsored by a mathematician familiar with the student's work and each paper will be refereed. Though the magazine is sponsored by the university, outside submissions are welcome. 

Silk Road Review, Pacific University Oregon  (creative writing)
Silk Road Reviewis a literary journal that accepts creative writing dealing specifically with place (fiction, narratives, poetry, etc.). They read submission from August 1st to May 1st, and accept submissions online only. 

Valley Humanities Review, Lebannon Valley College (humanities)
The Valley Humanities Review publishes a wide variety of undergraduate essays in the humanities, as well poetry. Submissions are accepted from September 1-December 15. Essays can be between 3000 and 6000 words. The VHR also accepts essays written in languages other than English with a length of 2000-6000 words.            

Vanderbuilt Undergraduate Research Journal, Vanderbuilt University (multidisciplinary)
Accepts submissions of outstanding undergraduate scholarship in any academic discipline.

Washington Square Review, New York University (fiction and poetry)
Washington Square is a nationally-distributed literary journal publishing fiction and poetry by emerging and established writers. Edited and produced biannually by the students of the NYU Graduate Creative Writing Program, Washington Square also sponsors an annual literary contest and hosts an annual benefit reading in New York City.
