Instructions for Completion of First
Portfolio of Online Discussion Posts
1. There will be an online discussion component
to the course that will require you to post responses to topic
questions about the textbook chapters and other readings at least
once a week and to respond to the postings of 2 of your classmates
each week. I will be assigning you to groups of 7 or 8 students and
your responses will be to the others in your group.
2. Twice during the semester you will be asked to
visit the St. John's University Writing Center in Mahoney and meet
with a writing tutor to select what you consider to be some of your
best postings and some of your weakest postings and then to write a
short reflection essay on why you think postings you selected were
strong or weak. You will then print out and submit to me a
portfolio of these postings and the reflection essay. The first
portfolio will be due mid-semester and include 5 strong and 5 weak
postings and the second portfolio will be due a week before the end
of the semester and include your 3 best postings and 3 weakest
posting for the semester.
3. Please make an appointment to visit the St.
John's University Writing Center in Mahoney to meet with a writing
tutor. You can make the appointment in person or online at

4. In conjunction with the writing tutor, I
would like you to select what you consider to be your 5 best
postings and your 5 weakest postings.
5. Write a short reflection essay on why you
think the postings you selected were strong or weak. What do you
like about the strong ones? What do you dislike about the weakest
ones?
6. You will then print out and submit to me a
portfolio of these postings and the reflection essay that includes
a cover sheet with your name and class.
7. The first completed portfolio will be due
on Monday, Oct. 27.
