V - Publish and Flourish

"Publish and Flourish" is the title that the first CTL, Director, Julia Upton, gave to a workshop on academic publishing. Since that time, a host of web resources have become available to support faculty writing efforts. A few are mentioned here along with some hints on how to be a productive scholar.

Points to Remember about Academic Publishing

  • Expect it to take longer than you think it will
  • Presenting a paper is a good way to get started on an article
  • Have more than one project, but not too many
  • Pay attention to the journal's instructions for authors

Get It Written!

  • Set aside time to write
  • Join a writing group or get a writing buddy
  • Keep a journal to trick yourself into writing
  • Writing for 15 minutes is better than not writing at all

Editing Tips:

  • Don't be afraid to chop
  • Edit, and the edit again
  • Listen to your inner voice
  • Ask someone else to read your work
