University Resources

  • The Technology Learning Center (TLC) is located in Bent Hall, Room 447 and provides assistance to faculty on email, the use of St. John's Central, and other technology-related issues. They can be reached at ex. 6402.
  • The University Libraries web site is the portal to a host of online resources. There is also a web page with links to resources of particular interest to faculty.
  • eReserve is the University Libraries electronic reserve system. It is a wonderful resource. It makes it easy for faculty to make print materials available to students electronically. The Libraries website also has information on copyright guidelines.
  • The Technology Learning Center (TLC)  provides courses dealing with the various components of Microsoft Office and with webpage development.
  • St. John's Central is the University's web portal. Each faculty member has a personalized homepage and course homepages for each course they teach. Through the course homepage you can easily email your students, manage a discussion board, and post your syllabus. If you need information on St. John's Central, just call the Technology Learning Center (TLC) at ext. 6402.
  • If you would like a more sophisticated course management tool than that provided through St. John's Central, the University also provides Blackboard CE 6 (formerly WebCT). You can get information on Blackboard CE 6 by calling the Technology Learning Center (TLC) at ext. 6402.
  • Portable Professor workshops provide instruction for full-time faculty in the use of a variety of electronic tools and help them to get the most out of their laptops.  A new series of workshops is now being offered on teaching with blogs and wikis, and also on several online communications tools.
  • There is now an Electronic Grade Book function in Login UIS (also called Banner), the University's administrative information system.
  • The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) offers Faculty Growth Grants of $1500 to support the efforts of full-time faculty in developing innovative teaching approaches, including those involving technology.
  • The CTL also sponsors a Fellowship Program in Technology and Teaching, in which full-time faculty participate for two years in a project involving the development of technological initiatives in their teaching.
  • There is a Where to Get Help webpage which provides contact information for many technology-related issues.

Laptops and Teaching

All full-time undergraduates now have laptops. Also our campuses are wireless, so we have a great opportunity to use technology effectively in our teaching. This does NOT mean that students should be allowed to use their laptops at all times. You can determine when use is appropriate, and also ask students to close their laptops if you find them using them inappropriately.
