Issues Affecting America: Responsible Citizenship Fall 2008

Research shows that college women are at greater risk for rape and other forms of sexual assault than either non-student women in their age group or women in general. Experts agree that campuses need to implement prevention programs to engage both men and women in examining attitudes that lead to sexual violence while providing tools to confront them. This workshop addresses the issue of sexual violence and the ways that unhealthful images of gender projected by society, the media and peers affect how students develop relationships. Students are asked to examine these images, challenge misconceptions and confront abusive peers as they work to foster a safe campus for all.

Don McPherson is Vice President of The Hopewell Group, Inc., a philanthropic consulting firm in New York City. Prior to that, he was founder and executive director of the Sports Leadership Institute at Adelphi University. Don is one of the nation’s leading educators and advocates for the prevention of men’s violence against women. His work on violence prevention has won national attention. He has been featured on MTV and in an article in the October 2002 issue of O magazine after appearing as a guest on the Oprah Winfrey Show in September 2002.

Following a successful high school athletic career, Don attended Syracuse University, where he was a consensus All-America selection and winner of more than 18 National Player of the Year honors. As a senior, he led the Orangemen to an undefeated regular season and finished second in the Heisman Trophy balloting. In 1998, he was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles; over the next seven years, he played for several NFL and CFL teams.

In spring of 1999, Don joined the board of directors of the Jenna Foundation for Non-Violence. He then created McPherson’s Mentors for Jenna, a mentor program aimed at reducing violence and promoting tolerance in Syracuse schools and communities. His other current board memberships include the Ms. Foundation for Women, Family and Children’s Association, Stop It Now!, Pennsylvania Coalition Against Sexual Assault and CONNECT (New York City). For his many accomplishments on the field, Don was recently elected to the College Football Hall of Fame.
