Issues Affecting America: Responsible
Citizenship Fall 2008
In “CONNECTED OR NOT CONNECTED,” 24-year-old entrepreneur
Lawrence Watkins explains how he started Great Black Speakers (GBS)
right out of college and has grown it to the premier speakers
bureau in the multicultural speakers market. In 18 months, Watkins
took GBS from 10 speakers to over 200 of society’s best-known
celebrities, experts and thought leaders. His networking skills
also landed him a full fellowship to the Johnson School of
Management at Cornell University. Watkins explains the networking
strategies he has developed since college and how students can take
advantage of them. Watkins networking is premised on adding value
to a relationship and not keeping score with others. In this
session, students learn:
- The formula to successful relationships in your business and
personal life
- Tips to effectively add value to your college community all the
way from the President to the janitors
- Strategic action steps to connect with excellent mentors and
the importance of having mentees
- Doing your networking homework to maximize opportunities
- How to be a Conference Commando and not just a spectator
- Follow up strategies that guarantee networking success
- The Genius of asking for exactly what you want and the way that
you want it
A 2006 University of Louisville graduate, Lawrence majored in
Electrical Engineering while participating heavily in student life
on his campus. During his college career, he ran for Student
Government President, planned a 700 person regional conference for
the National Society of Black Engineers and was Chapter Vice
President of Alpha Phi Alpha. He was instrumental in fostering
policy change through his appointments to several University
boards. In March 2008, Lawrence launched phase two of his company,
Great Black Publicity. This organization helps high-level experts
gain access to local, regional and national media.
