Course Description
This course will focus on the limits and possibilities of schooling to provide an educational experience which is equitable and academically excellent- what do schools do, what can schools do and what should schools do?   We will also address the various theories and functions of schooling, the development of American education , the meritocratic hypothesis and changing conceptions of Equality of Educational Opportunity. Attention will also be directed to various theories that attempt to explain unequal academic achievement in the schools.
