Summer Camp on Creative Problem Solving for the Gifted: Math and Writing

Center for Gifted Education will host a summer camp for the academically gifted, with focus on mathematics and writing every summer. The goals and objectives of the summer camp is to provide the academically gifted with opportunities to nurture their talents in math and writing, self-leadership, and global citizenship. 

Through the summer camp, gifted students will develop creativity and high-level thinking ability in math and writing. In addition, they will have opportunities to work collaboratively while working toward a creation of an interdisciplinary performing arts product  
 
Target Group:
Gifted students who are going to be in Grades 5-6 in September, 2009 

Identification Processes:
Participating students will be identified through 2 stages of screening,.

  • 1st stage: Screening based on their Intellectual ability, academic achievement in Mathematics and English, and teacher recommendations. Deadline for application for the 1st screening is around the middle of February each year. Those who are identified at the 1st stage will be invited for the 2nd stage of screening.
  • 2nd stage: Group tests on Creative problem solving ability in math and writing will be implemented for some students in the beginning of March every year.
  • Those who are finally screened for the summer program will be notified by the University by the beginning of April every year.

Structure of educational programs
The Program will be composed of activities which will contribute to:   

  • The balanced development of cognitive, affective, and social abilities of the gifted.
  • Enhancement of creativity in math problem solving
  • Enhancement of creativity in writing
  • Development of collaborative learning skills
  • Development of communication skills
  • Development of the leadership
  • Development of the global citizenship

All students will participate in 100 or more hours of formal class activities for 2 weeks.

  • 25 hrs of challenging and creative math
  • 25 hrs of research with emphasis on reading, debate, writing and presentation
  • 5 hrs of community service for underprivileged people
  • 25 hrs of interdisciplinary performing arts
  • Field trip
  • 20 hrs of lab sessions monitored by counselors for residential students  

All international students and non-New York students will be enrolled as residential students.  Local students will be enrolled as commuters or residential students.
