March 28, 2012

Alyssa Zuckerman ‘13 has been selected as the 2012 Coca-Cola Refreshments (CCR) Scholar for Excellence in Labor and Employment Law.

Alyssa earned a BA in Broadcast Journalism and Psychology from New York University and has worked in various labor and employment and worker’s compensation law firms. At St. John's, she has received the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Public Sector Labor Law.

The prestigious CCR scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving first-year or second-year St. John's law student. In addition to the monetary award, the CCR Scholar is offered summer employment in the CCR labor relations department. “Celebrating its third year, the Scholarship of Excellence in Labor and Employment Law commends deserving students by helping them achieve their goals of higher education in law. This program demonstrates Coca-Cola’s commitment to students at St. John’s School of Law,” said Steven Johnson, CCR’s Group Director of Labor Relations.

“We are pleased to be able to offer this opportunity to students at St. John School of Law and are so proud of this exceptional student, Ms. Zuckerman, for this honor," said Michael Van Aken, CCR’s Vice President of Human Resources. "This scholarship reflects our commitment to meet important educational needs in the communities we serve.”

“St. John’s has one of the finest labor programs in the country,” proclaimed AFL-CIO New York State President Denis Hughes at the Theology of Work and the Dignity of Workers Conference at St. John’s on March 18, 2011,” said David L. Gregory, the Dorothy Day Professor of Law and the Executive Director of the Center for Labor and Employment Law at St. John’s School of Law. “The unanimous choice of the Dean and the Scholarship Committee as the Coca-Cola Refreshments Scholar for Excellence in Labor and Employment Law, Alyssa Zuckerman is also the Co-President of the Labor and Employment Law Society. She combines superb academic achievements with demonstrated leadership and is well respected by her peers. She personifies our distinguished international reputation, and will be a stellar Coca-Cola Refreshments Scholar.”

“I am thrilled to receive this honor. Coca Cola’s collaboration with the Center for Labor and Employment Law offers me ―and my fellow St. John’s School of Law colleagues― a unique and meaningful opportunity to explore and chart our path to a successful career in labor and employment law, one of the profession’s most interesting practice areas,” said Alyssa.
