St. John's University School of Law Hosts Bronx Public High School Students

March 22, 2013

On March 15, 2013, 33 high school students from the Bronx School for Law, Government and Justice visited the Law School and toured campus. An annual event since 1997, this community outreach program was started by Robin Boyle, Assistant Dean for Academic Success and Professor of Legal Writing at the Law School. It is designed to introduce students to the study of law and to St. John’s University. Law School alumnus David C. Bank’s ’93, the Bronx high school’s first principal, helped launch the program.

This year’s half-day visit was facilitated, in part, by the Law School Admission Council (LSAC), as part of its DiscoverLaw.org grant program. After a welcome from Law School Vice Dean Emeritus Andrew Simons, the students learned about college admissions from Douglas McNabb, Assistant Director of Admissions at St. John’s University. Law School alumnae Queenie Paniagua ’12 and Associate Director of Admissions Dorothy Moran inspired the students with their remarks about the Law School and what it means to be a lawyer. The students then toured the Law School building and St. John’s grounds before departing.

“Our partnership with St. John's is invaluable in that it allows us to give South Bronx students access to a suburban university experience,” said Kimberly Felder, Director of Corporate and Community Partnerships for the high school. “Many of our students have never had an opportunity to see Queens and are in awe when they realize everything St. John's has to offer. It becomes clear that they do not have to go far from home to have an away experience and strong sense of community. We are grateful to the Law School and the entire St. John's community for their commitment to helping us level the playing field.”

“St. John’s School of Law is committed to engaging our community in meaningful ways” added Professor Boyle. “We have a long and proud tradition of educating a student body that embodies the wonderful diversity of New York City. This is always a great event for the Law School to host.”
