April 16, 2012
St.
John’s University will once again be celebrating the lives of those
affected by cancer through the Relay for Life walkathon. The Queens
campus will host its seventh annual Relay for Life on April 13,
2012 in Carnesecca Arena and for the first time the Staten Island
Campus will be hosting their Relay for Life on April 20 at the
University’s Campus Center Gym. At the Relay for Life event,
hundreds of students, faculty and staff members and University
administrators will participate in an all-night walkathon in an
effort at raising money to fight cancer.
Luminarias
(glowing memorials) will be sold prior to the event and represent
those individuals that are affected by cancer, with all proceeds
going to the American Cancer Society’s College Relay for Life. The
luminarias will be used to light up Carnesecca Arena and the Campus
Center Gym for the hundreds participating.
The opening
ceremony in Queens will begin at 6 p.m. and at 6:30 p.m. on Staten
Island. Both ceremonies will be followed by a Luminaria Ceremony
and then a Survivor Walk and Fight Back Ceremonies. The night will
be highlighted by several special activities and conclude at 6:00
a.m. on Saturday morning.
