Director of Field Experiences and Assistant Professor of Education
on the Staten Island campus. Prior to that Dr. Scarpaci had been
Director of Field Experiences on the Queens campus. He has
extensive experience at all levels of education, having been a
teacher, assistant principal, principal, director and
professor.
As a school principal his school was selected by the New York
State Education Department as a “School for the 21st Century”
(1997), “A School that Works” (1994) and given the “Outstanding
Early Childhood Program Award” (1996). His exemplary leadership
style was demonstrated in his former schools selection as one of
the first “School Based Management/Shared Decision Making Model
Schools,” (1991). The school was also chosen by Redbook Magazine as
“One of America’s Best Schools” (1995). Dr. Scarpaci was honored as
“Man of the Year for 1997” by the Ragamuffin Organization of Bay
Ridge and awarded “Outstanding School Supervisor Award” (1998) by
St John’s University.
As Director of Field Experiences on the Queens campus, he
reorganized the program, and implemented changes as mandated by the
State Education Department. He also coordinated the Fellows
program, and assisted in making it the successful program it has
become.
Dr. Scarpaci’s outstanding achievements have been recognized
locally and nationally throughout his distinguished career. His
focus has been and will continue to be in the areas of teacher
preparation, classroom management and curriculum. He is presently
researching the relationships between effective classroom
management, teacher retention, and student achievement.
