Student Competitions

In collaboration with the Dispute Resolution Society, its student arm, the Carey Center hosts competitions in dispute resolution and sponsors teams of St. John's law students competing in a wide range of external competitions.

The Securities Dispute Resolution Triathlon
The Carey Center hosts the Securities Dispute Resolution Triathlon, a unique national event in which student teams from law schools around the country compete in the negotiation, mediation, and arbitration of a realistic securities dispute, before the experienced neutrals of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA).

External Competitions
St. John's Law School teams compete against teams from other law schools in both national and international dispute resolution competitions, including:

  • ABA Client Counseling Competition
  • ABA Negotiation Competition
  • ABA Representing Clients in Mediation Competition
  • ABA Arbitration Competition
  • ICC Mediation Competition, Paris, France
  • Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Competition, Vienna, Austria
  • Tulane Baseball Arbitration Competition

Selection for external teams is highly competitive. Students apply for positions on the  Dispute Resolution Society each spring, and competition teams are selected from among the DRS students at the beginning of the fall semester.

Internal Competitions
The Dispute Resolution Society hosts negotiation competitions each fall and spring. The fall competition is open to second and third year law students, and the spring competition is open to first and second year law students.
