Consumer Debt Training Opportunities
The Law School is pleased to offer the following trainings to
prepare students to participate in pro bono programs that
assist pro se defendants in consumer debt cases in Queens
Civil Court.
Open to All Students: CLARO is a walk-in clinic held on Friday
afternoons where volunteer attorneys help pro se
defendants draft litigation documents, develop settlement
negotiation and trial strategies, and prepare to represent
themselves in the litigation process. Law students conduct intake,
clarify the status of cases, and help draft litigation
documents.
Open to 2Ls and 3Ls: New
York State Access to Justice Program’s Consumer Debt Volunteer
Lawyer for a Day is a program providing limited
representation to pro se defendants at pre-trial
conferences. Students and attorneys represent defendants in court,
work to negotiate favorable settlements, and advise on future trial
strategies. Students interested in this program must participate in
an additional hour of training at a later date.
