The external scholarships are listed below in reverse chronological order. Scholarships with deadlines that have passed within the past year remain on this site because, oftentimes, the same scholarships are offered year after year and students can use expired listings to determine what scholarships could be available in future years.

U.S. Court of Federal Claims Bar Association's Carole Bailey Scholarship

A scholarship of up to $5,000 will be awarded to at least one law student in honor of the U.S. Court of Federal Claims' former Chief Deputy Clerk of Administrative Services, Carole Bailey.  In commemoration of Carole's longstanding commitment to public service and her tireless efforts in working with and providing assistance to the Bar Association, the Bar Association is pleased to award scholarships to law students with a demonstrated commitment to public service.  Any student who is 1) enrolled or enrolling in any law school accredited by the ABA for the 2013-2014 academic year; and 2) able to demonstrate either an interest in pursuing a public service legal career, or a past or present commitment to public service is eligible to apply.  An interest in the subject matter jurisdiction of the Court of Federal Claims is beneficial, but not necessary, for an applicant to be selected.  Further information, instructions, and application may be found here.

Cole Schotz Diversity Scholarship Program

This $5,000 scholarship is open to a full-time law student in good standing completing his/her first year of law school at an ABA-accredited law school by July 1, 2013.  Consideration is given to the candidate's academic achievement (minimum 3.25 GPA at his/her undergraduate school and law school), involvement in community service, demonstrated leadership abilities, and advancement of diversity in the legal profession.  Please visit these links for more information and the application.

Nadrich & Cohen, LLP Emergency Fund

This $1,500 scholarship will be awarded to a deserving law school student for the 2013-2014 academic year.  To apply, please submit a 500 to 1000 word essay on the importance of jury trials in our society.  Submissions will be judged according to creativity, passion, and knowledge of the subject.  For more information and to apply, please visit the Nadrich & Cohen website.

Buckfire & Buckfire, P.C. Diversity Scholarship

This $2,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student who is currently attending an accredited law school who is either a member of an ethnic or racial minority or who demonstrates commitment to issues of diversity within their academic career.  Applicants must have completed at least one semester of law school and have a minimum law school GPA of 3.0.  Application and further information may be found here.

Waterbury Bar Association Scholarships

The Waterbury Bar Association offers three scholarships: 1) $1,500 Waterbury Bar Association Scholarship (applicants must be residents of the Waterbury Judicial District, i.e. Middlebury, Naugatuck, Prospect, Southbury, Watertown, Wolcott, Woodbury, or Waterbury, and be in or entering their final year of study Fall 2013 at an accredited law school); 2) $1,000 Bar President's Scholarship (applicants must be residents of the Waterbury Judicial District, i.e. Middlebury, Naugatuck, Prospect, Southbury, Watertown, Wolcott, Woodbury, or Waterbury, and be in or entering their final year of study Fall 2013 at an accredited law school); and 3) $1,000 Edward Traurig Scholarship (applicants must be residents of the Waterbury Judicial District, i.e. Middlebury, Naugatuck, Prospect, Southbury, Watertown, Wolcott, Woodbury, or Waterbury, and can be entering their second or final year of study in Fall 2013 as a full or part-time student at an accredited law school).  Further information and a scholarship application may be found here.

Women's Bar Association of Orange and Sullivan Counties ("WBAOSC") Foundation, Inc. Scholarships

Two $1,250 scholarships will be awarded to female incoming or current law students who were residents of Orange or Sullivan County, NY at the time of their graduation from high school or college.  Scholarships will be awarded to applicants who demonstrate academic achievement, leadership, and philanthropic potential; a strong commitment to the profession; and/or the ability to overcome difficult obstacles.  Involvement in programs that highlight advancement or support of women in the profession and in the community and participation in community outreach programs will also be considered.  Previous recipients of this scholarship are eligible to reapply.  Further information and an application may be found here.

American Association for Justice Student Scholarships

The American Association for Justice offers several different scholarships for 3L or 4L part-time women (Mike Eidson Scholarship), 1L or 2L minorities (Richard D. Hailey Scholarships), and 1L's or 2L's interested in trial advocacy (Trial Advocacy Scholarship).  Please see the links for more details and application information.

AAJ Mike Eidson Scholarship

This $5,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a rising 3L (or 4L in a night program) female student who has demonstrated a commitment to a career as a plaintiffs' lawyer or criminal defense lawyer, along with dedication to upholding and defending the principles of the Constitution, and to the concept of a fair trial, the adversary system, and a just result for the injured, the accused, and those whose rights are jeopardized.  Application and further details may be found here.

Michigan Auto Law Diversity Scholarship

This $2,000 scholarship will be awarded to a 1L or 2L student who is a member of an ethnic or racial minority or who demonstrates a defined commitment to issues of diversity within their academic career.  For application and more information, please visit the Opportunities section on the Michigan Auto Law website.

Puerto Rican Bar Association Scholarship

The PRBA awards scholarships ranging from $2,500 to $5,000 each based on the funds raised by the PRBA.  All Latino students attending law school in New York or who are permanent residents of New York are eligible to apply.  PRBA selects recipients based on community involvement, financial need, and academic promise.  All applicants must be in their first, second, or third year (if an evening student) of a JD degree program at an ABA-approved law school.  All scholarship candidates must submit a complete and accurate application along with the required supplemental materials postmarked or emailed by April 19, 2013, to be considered.  Application and more information may be found here.

Queens County Bar Association Scholarship

This $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a first-, second-, or third-year law student based upon personal financial need, a commitment to community service, and academic achievement as demonstrated by a personal statement and recommendation letters.  Applicants must have been involved in community service or public interest law to qualify.  Applicants must be currently enrolled in an ABA-accredited law school in the NYC metro area or a resident of Queens County.  Click here for more information and the application.

George H. Nofer Scholarship for Law and Public Policy

Three awards in the amount of $5,000 each will be offered to full-time students with a moderate to profound hearing loss who are attending an accredited law school or a masters or doctoral program in public policy or public administration.  For further requirements, details, and application, please click here.

Brandeis Association Scholarships

Two scholarships in the amount of $4,500 each will be awarded to Jewish law students in their 2nd or 3rd year of study who are residents of Queens County or who are attending law school in Queens County.  In awarding the scholarships, consideration will be given to financial need, legal scholarship, and community involvement.  The application criteria for both scholarships are the same.  Applications and instructions may be found here

Robert Masur Fellowship in Civil Liberties

This $1,000 fellowship is open to first-year law students who intend to carry out significant activities during the summer between their first and second years of law school in the areas of civil rights and/or civil liberties.  Proposed activities may include a writing or research project, work with a public interest organization in the areas of civil rights or civil liberties, work on a civil rights or civil liberties law case under the supervision of a faculty member or lawyer, or any other work in the areas of civil rights or civil liberties.  Please visit the Nation Institute website for further information.

The Association of Black Women Attorneys, Inc. Scholarship

This scholarship will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated community service, personal financial need, and current enrollment as a full-time student at an accredited law school in Connecticut, New Jersey, or New York.  Recommendations and personal statements should reflect community service activities.  Please visit the ABWA website for application, recommendation forms, and more details.

Howard Fox Memorial Law Scholarship

This scholarship was established for Berks County, PA residents entering their second year at an accredited law school. The fund is in memory of Howard Fox, who was a member of the Berks County Bar Association and an attorney in the Office of the Public Defender at the time of his accidental death.  For more details and the online application, please visit the Berks County Community Foundation website.

Joseph H. Gellert Dutchess County Bar Association Scholarship

This $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a resident of Dutchess County who is enrolled in an accredited law school as a 2L, 3L, or 4L. Please find the application, along with further instructions, here.

Hudson County Bar Foundation Scholarship

Association of Black Women Lawyers of New Jersey Bernadine Johnson-Marshal and Martha Bell Williams Scholarship

Scholarships in honor of Bernadine Johnson-Marshal and Martha Bell Williams will be awarded to female law students of African descent selected by the Scholarship Committee who are either: (1) enrolled at an accredited law school in New Jersey or (2) New Jersey permanent residents enrolled at an accredited law school outside of New Jersey.  To be eligible, the student must be a 1L, 2L, or part-time 3L.  Previous ABWL scholarship recipients will not be considered.  Application and more information may be found here.

Columbian Lawyers Association Scholarship

The Columbian Lawyers Association First Judicial Department will award four $2,500 scholarships to law students of some Italian heritage attending law schools within the City of New York or the Counties of Nassau, Suffolk, and Westchester.  The awards will be for the current school year and for each year the students selected continue their studies.  To be considered, students must fill out an application and send a letter addressed to Frank P. Salvi, Schostok, & Pritchard P.C. Scholarship Essay Contest

Salvi, Schostok, & Pritchard P.C. will award 8 scholarships totaling $5,000.  First place will be awarded $2,500.  Law students at an ABA-approved law school must submit an application and write and submit an essay about cerebral palsy or car accidents, as further detailed on the scholarship website.

Nassau County Women's Bar Foundation, Inc. Scholarship

This scholarship will be granted to an outstanding woman who has displayed a commitment to continuing to attend law school through her 2L and 3L years. Applicants must be residents of Nassau County; must have been accepted to or currently enrolled in an accredited law school in Nassau, Suffolk, Queens, Kings, New York, Richmond, Westchester, or Bronx Counties; must have graduated college with at least a 3.0; must maintain a GPA of 2.75 in law school in the year the funds are applied to; should display characteristics consistent with the mission of the Nassau County Women's Bar Association; and must display financial need. Bronx County Bar Association Scholarships

The Bronx County Bar Association will award two scholarships each in the amount of $3,000 to deserving first and second year law students or third year law students expecting to graduate in May or June 2013.  Applicants must be domiciled in Bronx County (proof may be driver's license, non-driver's ID, utility bill, etc.).  Application and more information may be found here

New York Bar Foundation Trusts and Estates Law Section Fellowship

Two fellowships, valued at $5,000 each, will take place in summer 2013 and are available to all 2L students enrolled in a law school in New York State during the 2012-2013 academic year who intend to practice law in New York State.  One fellowship will take place in the Chambers of the Honorable Robert J. Gigante, Richmond County Surrogate's Court, and one fellowship will take place in the Chambers of the Honorable Vincent W. New York Bar Foundation Commercial and Federal Litigation Section Minority Fellowship

This $6,000 fellowship is available to all 1L minority students currently enrolled in a law school in the state of New York.  The fellowship will take place in summer 2013 for 10 weeks in NYC in the Chambers of Honorable Jeffrey K. Queens Catholic Lawyers Guild Scholarship 

This $1,500 scholarship is available to students who reside or attend law school in Queens County and who are members of a parish in Queens County. Queens County Women's Bar Association Faith O'Neal Scholarship

Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to students enrolled at an ABA-accredited law school who have completed their first full semester and domicile or attend a law school in Queens County. The scholarship committee shall make its determination based on community service, financial need, academics, and written personal statement. U.S. Court of Federal Claims Bar Association  

The Bar Association is offering a scholarship of up to $5,000.00 to at least one law student with a demonstrated commitment to public service.  The scholarship is in honor of the Court’s recently-retired Chief Deputy Clerk of Administrative Services, Carole Bailey.  Carole’s commitment to public service was unwavering throughout her legal and professional career, and in furtherance of our mission as a 501(c)(3) organization, the Bar Association seeks to aid law students in achieving their own accomplishments in pursuit of public service. Columbian Lawyers Scholarship

Typically three scholarships in the sum of $3,000 to $4,000 each will be awarded based upon need, scholarship, and extracurricular activities. Applicants must either attend law school in Queens County or reside in Queens County and attend law school elsewhere. The student must also be of Italian ancestry.  Please find the application here.

New York Bar Foundation Elder Law Section Scholarship

This $2,500 scholarship will be awarded to a second- or third-year student enrolled in a law school in New York during the 2012-2013 academic year and who is actively participating in an Elder Law Clinic at the school during the 2012-2013 academic year or performs other substantial efforts which demonstrate interest in the legal rights of the elderly or the practice of elder law.  A preference will be given to a student who demonstrates a present and permanent physical or mental disability that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities of the individual.  A preference will also be given to a student who demonstrates financial need.  For further scholarship guidelines and an application, please click here.

New York Bar Foundation Real Property Law Section Lorraine Power Tharp Scholarship

This $1,500 scholarship will be awarded to a second- or third-year full-time or second-, third-, or fourth-year part-time law student in the 2012-2013 academic year who best exemplifies the core values important to Lorraine Power Tharp, Esq. - academic excellence, a demonstrated interest in public service, high integrity, and, if possible, an interest in real property law.  Please find further information and application requirements here.

J. L. Turner Legal Association Minority Scholarship

J.L. Turner Legal Association (“JLTLA”), the African-American bar association in Dallas, Texas, established several $2,000 scholarships to provide financial assistance to minority law students who have a connection to the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and to expose students to the Dallas-Fort Worth legal community.  Many past scholarship recipients are now members of JLTLA and practicing law in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.  There are two types of JLTLA Minority Law Student Scholarships: merit and financial need.  In selecting financial-need scholarship winners, we will consider an applicant’s need, disadvantaged circumstances, community involvement, and other factors.  JLTLA merit scholarships will be awarded primarily on academic standing.  To be eligible to receive a JLTLA scholarship, an applicant must: (1) be a United States citizen or permanent resident; (2) have a connection to the Dallas-Fort Worth area; (3) be enrolled at an accredited United States law school; and (4) be in good academic standing (proof of academic standing is required).  Applications and additional information may be found on the JLTLA website.

Latham & Watkins Diversity Scholars Program

This program awards six $10,000 non-renewable scholarships for use during a student's second year of law school.  Factors considered in choosing the Diversity Scholars include motivation for pursuing a legal career, academic and leadership achievements, life experiences and challenges, and desire to practice at a global law firm and contribute to its diversity objectives.  Recipients will be announced in late summer 2012.  The application process is open to all law students at ABA-accredited law schools who have completed their first year of a full-time JD program by the application deadline.  The scholarships are not contingent upon receiving or accepting an offer of employment at Latham.  Application forms and more information on the program can be found by clicking here.

Essex County Bar Foundation Biunno Scholarship Program

These scholarships are designed to offer financial assistance to persons with disabilities who are currently attending law school.  For purposes of this scholarship, a disability is limited to a permanent physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities of the individual having such an impairment.  Applicants must also be residents of New Jersey and demonstrate financial need, law school achievement, and commitment to the practice of law.  Please find the application and further requirements here.

AAJ Women for Justice Education Fund's Mike Eidson Scholarship

This $5,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a rising 3L or rising 4L in an evening program (i.e. class of 2013) female student who has demonstrated a commitment to: 1) a career as a plaintiffs' lawyer or criminal defense lawyer, 2) upholding and defending the principles of the Constitution, 3) the concept of a fair trial, the adversary system, and a just result for the injured, the accused, and those whose rights are jeopardized.  The Scholarship will be awarded at the AAJ Annual Convention, which will take place this July in Chicago.  The application and further details may be found here.

National LGBT Bar Association Student Leadership Award

The National LGBT Bar Association Student Leadership Award is presented to a candidate who has graduated or will be graduating from law school between September 2011 and September 2012 and has demonstrated a unique level of commitment to serving the LGBT community throughout their law school career. Alia Herrera Memorial Scholarship

American Association of Justice Richard D. Hailey Scholarships

Up to six $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to incoming first, second, and third-year African American, Hispanic, Asian American, Native American, and biracial AAJ law student members.  Scholarships will be awarded to the applicants who best meet criteria including, but not limited to: 1) an interest and proficiency of skills in trial advocacy, 2) a desire to represent victims, 3) a commitment to AAJ and dedication to its mission through involvement in an AAJ student chapter and Minority Caucus activities, and 4) show a financial need for the scholarship.  For more information and the application, please visit the AAJ website.

LeClairRyan 1L Diversity Scholarship

This $5,000 scholarship will be given to a diverse 1L law student who most exemplifies the late Oliver W. Hill's qualities of legal excellence and selfless dedication to the fight for justice.  Applicants must be in good standing at an ABA-accredited U.S. law school in any state in which LeClairRyan has an office (NY is one); have completed one semester of law school; have a law school GPA of at least 3.0; and identify as a member of one of the racial/ethnic groups as defined by the EEOC or as LGBT.  For application and further information, please click here.

Queens County Bar Association Scholarship

This $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a 1L or 2L student or a 3L student graduating in May or June 2012.  The student must be enrolled in an ABA-accredited law school, along with proof of domicile in Queens County or attendance at a law school in the Metropolitan Area.  The scholarship will be awarded based upon personal financial need, a commitment to community service and academic achievement.  If you have not been involved in community service or public interest law, you will not qualify.  For application and further requirements, please visit the QCBA website.
