St. John’s University Makes Waves in the BIG EAST

January 10, 2011

The college basketball world has taken notice: the Red Storm are rising in the BIG EAST.

Thanks to big wins over tough conference rivals, the St. John's men's basketball team is off to its best start in over 10 years and is currently ranked No. 11 on the RPI (ratings percentage index) national rankings. The Red Storm begin an important home stand this week when they take on No. 4 Syracuse on Wednesday, January 12 at Madison Square Garden, and fan support is needed for St. John’s to make the most of its home-court advantage.

The Office of Athletic Development invites all St. John's University alumni and friends to attend a pre-game reception at MSG prior to Wednesday's game. Legendary Head Basketball Coach Lou Carnesecca ’50C, ’60GEd, ’00HON and former players Carmine Calzonetti ’69C, John Warren ’74C, ’88HON and Felipe Lopez.’98SVC will be in attendance. Catch up with old friends and talk St. John's hoops in preparation for this crucial match up against a nationally-ranked BIG EAST rival.

Led by strong performances from seniors D.J. Kennedy, Justin Brownlee and Dwight Hardy (last week’s BIG EAST Player of the Week), this year’s Red Storm have amassed an impressive 3-1 conference record.

They’ve also brought a renewed energy back to their home floor. Anyone who saw the Red Storm's last-minute thriller over No. 13 Georgetown, its first win against a nationally-ranked opponent in two years, knows how electric the atmosphere can be at the World's Most Famous Arena.

This is one game and pre-game reception you don’t want to miss. Let's show Syracuse why St. John's is New York’s college team, and why the rest of the BIG EAST has reason to fear the Red Storm.

There will be other men’s basketball receptions throughout the season, so be sure to join us at one of these exciting events.
