St. John’s University School of Law recently completed its first
Summer Rome Program. Thirty-two law students representing St.
John’s, De Paul, Fordham, Hofstra, Loyola Los Angeles, Louisiana
State University, John Marshall, Nova Southeastern, SUNY Buffalo,
Touro, University of Baltimore, University of Houston, UC Hastings,
University of Omaha, University of San Francisco, and Washington
University in St. Louis participated in the program.
The program included courses in International
Environmental Law, Comparative Corporate Governance, International
Banking Law and International Art Law, coupled with visits to the
Italian Central Bank, the CONSOB (Italian SEC), the Italian Supreme
Court, the Italian Supreme Administrative Court, the Senate and the
Carabinieri (Italian state police) headquarters for the protection
of stolen art. Guest lecturers included the Secretary General
of the International Chamber of Commerce in Rome, Dr. Amerigo Gori;
the Secretary General of the International Association of Judges,
Dr. Antonio Mura; the Chief Operating Officer of the Fondazione
Parco Biomedico San Raffaele of Rome, Dr. Domenico Pecorini; and
Avvocato Paolo Carbone, Professor of Law at the University of
Sassari.
Classes were held at the Rome Campus of St. John’s University in
Via Santa Maria Mediatrice, close to the Vatican, giving students
and faculty the opportunity to visit the Eternal City and explore
the beauty of its museums, churches, Roman temples, parks, and
restaurants. The group also participated in a boat trip on the
Tiber River and visited the ancient Roman port of Ostia and its
well-preserved archeological site.
