School of Law Hosts Training in Dispute Resolution for Project Reconciliation – Ghana 2008

July 22, 2008

On July 21, St. John’s hosted the opening session of a weeklong program in dispute resolution for faculty and students of the Catholic University of Ghana as part of the program entitled Project Reconciliation – Ghana 2008.  Sponsored by the Giving to Ghana Foundation and Feerick, Lynch, MacCartney, Esqs., this project is an effort to help develop systems of alternative dispute resolution in Ghana, where the formal legal system operates slowly and has insufficient resources outside the major cities of Accra and Kusami.  It is part of an ongoing process to train individuals to serve as arbitrators and mediators to resolve conflicts that otherwise might take years to resolve or end in violence.  St. John’s law professors Paul Kirgis, Ettie Ward, Larry Cunningham, and Elayne Greenberg participated in the program.
