Transfer
Students
Based upon availability, admission is offered to transfer
applicants who have demonstrated sufficient capacity to
successfully complete the program of studies who generally have
achieved grades at the "B" level or higher through the first year
of attendance at another ABA-approved law school. Transfer
applicants must have completed one full year of law
school. Advanced standing is granted for no more than
one-third of the St. John's Law J.D. requirements, as determined by
the Office of the Dean subsequent to admission.
Applying to the School of Law as a transfer student requires the
following:
- A completed St. John's University School of Law application,
containing a statement of the student's reasons for wanting to
transfer;
- An official transcript, certifying regular attendance and
successful completion of courses equal in time to those taken by
students at the School of Law, with a full time (three-year)
program of at least ten hours per week or a part time (four-year)
program of at least eight hours per week;
- A letter from the Dean or appropriate law school official
certifying that the applicant is in good standing at his or her
current law school; and
- An official copy of the applicant's CAS report.
Transfer students are required to earn at least 56 semester
hours credit at St. John's University School of Law to be eligible
for the J.D. degree. Application priority deadline for the Spring
semester is December 1 and for the Fall semester is June 1.
Admission with advanced standing is subject to any additional
special conditions the faculty may impose. Differences in
programs and courses, as well as scheduling difficulties,
frequently result in the loss of some credit. Applicants
contemplating a transfer to the School of Law should submit
applications well in advance of the date of any prospective
transfer.
Visiting Students
Applying to the School of Law as a visiting student
requires the following:
- A completed St. John's University School of Law application,
containing a statement of the student's reasons for seeking
visiting student status
- A letter of good standing and permission from the Dean of the
ABA-approved law school the applicant currently attends
- An official transcript containing grades for all law school
courses the applicant has completed
- A copy of the applicant's CAS report — the copy may be
forwarded with the official transcript
Summer Visiting
Students
The seven-week summer session normally runs from early
June through early August. Applicants with advanced standing may be
admitted to the summer program, at the discretion of the Committee
on Admissions, on the following conditions:
- The applicant submits a special summer program application
(link below). It should be filed as early as possible, but no later
than May 20, along with the required, non-refundable fee of $60.
This fee will be applied toward summer tuition.
- The applicant provides a letter of good standing and approval,
signed by the Dean of the ABA-approved law school at which the
applicant is a matriculated student. This letter also should
certify that the applicant will have completed at least one year of
law study by the end of the spring semester.
