The people, opportunities, and alumni
network have helped Christine Hogan make the most of her St. John’s
experience
The one thing Christine Hogan knew when she was looking around
at law schools was that she wanted to live and learn in New York.
So, clearly, St. John’s was on her list from the start. But when
she started looking deeper, she quickly found that all New York law
schools are not alike.
“When I got here I was really impressed with the building, all
the resources, and the alumni network is fantastic. So I knew if I
came here it would be that much easier for me to get a job than if
I’d gone to other law schools in the area.”
Upon seeing all of the opportunities—both in and out of the
classroom—she knew she’d made the right choice. In her first year
she participated in the 1L Mock Trial Competition, which provided
her with an ideal chance to learn how to be a practicing
lawyer.
“I got to learn how to do opening and closing statements,
directs and crosses, and to learn evidence law. I was a
quarterfinalist, so it was really exciting.”
Christine is getting set to take the reins as Editor-in-Chief of
the St. John’s Law Review. She also participated in St. John’s
Street Law Externship Program, which involved going to a local high
school once a week to teach an introductory law class to juniors
and seniors.
But the experience that has had the biggest impact during
Christine’s experience at St. John’s was the internship she
completed at the New York County District Attorney’s Office.
“It was a fantastic experience. I was able to write a reply to a
motion. I got to second-seat an attempted rape trial, so I was at
the table next to the prosecutor as she was arguing her case. I
helped with legal issues that came up, offered suggestions on
various topics. It was an incredible experience for me.”
She has also capitalized on the School’s greatest resource—the
people.
“I’ve met great people here who I can share moments with. Law
school is very hard, but the people here, especially the faculty,
are fantastic. The support system at St. John’s is one of its
greatest strengths.”
