Requirements

The program offers a Thesis or Non-Thesis Option.

Thesis Option
 (33 credit hours)

  • 18 credits in major concentration
  • Six credits in minor concentration
  • Thesis (register for Master’s Research, six credits)
  • HIS 401 (three credits)
  • Foreign language knowledge – French, Spanish or German (Students substitute another language appropriate to research.)
  • Comprehensive exam

Non-Thesis Option
(33 credit hours)

  • 18 credits in major concentration
  • Six credits in minor concentration
  • Six credits of electives
  • HIS 401 (three credits)
  • Comprehensive exam

Entrance Requirements
Candidates must submit the following items with their application for admission:

  • Evidence of a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university with a cumulative overall undergraduate average of at least B (3.0/4.0)
  • Evidence of at least 24 credit hours of undergraduate preparation in history with an overall average of 3.0; students who lack this preparation may fulfill the requirement by taking undergraduate courses approved by the chair of graduate history
  • Two letters of recommendation attesting to the applicant’s academic quality
  • A personal statement detailing the student’s professional goals and personal experience
