Public History Today-A New Life for History
Scholarship?
Some sources report a 49% drop in awarding of history graduate
degrees during 2006 to 2011, and as much as 10% unemployment among
humanities graduates. Cutbacks in university programs
reduce opportunities for teaching, scholarly study, publishing and
engagement with others interested in history and related
disciplines. At the same time, the aging of the baby boom
generation offers potential for a much higher level of public
interest in history and engagement with history exhibitions,
research, media, study and organizations. What do these
trends mean for history students today, and for those institutions
responsible for telling the stories of the past for the benefit of
future generations?
