St. John’s University’s Global Outreach Brings “Vietnamese Modernism” to the Dr. M. T. Geoffrey Yeh Art Gallery

October 13, 2007

St. John’s University’s Dr. M. T. Geoffrey Yeh Art Gallery presents “Vietnamese Modernism,” on exhibit October 15, 2007 - January 15, 2008 on the University’s Queens campus.

The exhibit, co-sponsored by St. John’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Nhat Minh Co., LTD, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and Kaw Valley Companies, Inc. will be a means to share Vietnamese culture and to introduce a select group of emerging artists to the New York metropolitan area, as many of the participating artists will be visiting and exhibiting their works in the West for the first time. The premise of this show is to introduce Vietnamese modernism to American and other visitors alike, as seen primarily through the works of the artists and fashion designers.

“This exhibition enhances St. John’s strong reputation in the Vietnamese community here in the metropolitan area and in Vietnam itself, while also emphasizing the Yeh Gallery’s reputation as a premier destination for viewing Asian works of art.” said Parvez Mohsin, Director of the Dr. M. T. Geoffrey Yeh Art Gallery. “Working closely with artists living in Vietnam, we hope to maintain the links with traditional culture while promoting and entertaining an excellent selection of these new art talents to the United States for everyone to enjoy.”

St. John’s University has an academic partnership in Vietnam that, through academics and sports, has developed an international relationship of understanding, peace and friendship between the two countries and also fosters academic development among the St. John’s Fine Arts Department, its faculty and students. St. John’s has also dedicated resources for permanent programming in the area of service-learning to complement the academic and athletic elements already existing through the study abroad program.
