students return to St. John’s for classes this fall, they will have
another chance to transform school spirit into “points” for cool
gear, gift cards, Metro Cards and movie tickets.
September will mark the second year of the “MVP Most Valuable
Participant Student Rewards Program” — St. John’s newest way to say
thank you to its most spirited students. The program’s first year
came to a ringing close this past May as students poured into the
Campus Concierge to collect their prizes.
“We’re extremely proud of our students for embracing this program,”
said Mary Pelkowski, Associate Dean for Student Engagement.
“They’re discovering the many ways they can achieve their goals by
further engaging themselves on campus.”
can’t have too much school spirit,” said Darren M. Morton, M.Ed.,
Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs. The Division of
Student Affairs launched the MVP Program last summer. “This program
is designed to increase spirit and a sense of tradition, while
creating excitement and attendance at all campus-wide events —
athletic, academic, professional and social.”
The program awards “MVP Points” every time students at the Queens,
Staten Island and Manhattan campuses swipe their ID cards at an
event. They redeem points for prizes such as St. John’s apparel and
gear, gift cards, Metro Cards, movie tickets and free drinks in the
D’Angelo Center’s new Starbucks café. Top prizes include $100 gas
or Metro Cards (450 points), $250 American Express cards (600
points) and $500 for the most points.
Six students earned top prizes this past year: at Queens and
Manhattan, Patrick Kenny (658 points), Warren Cheung See Kit (643
points) and Theresa Brennan (608 points); at Staten Island, Tin
Tran (262 points), Brian Andrade (237 points) and Alexander
Rodriguez (235 points).
