“Thanks to the generosity of SI Bank & Trust Foundation we
were able to expand our Student/Mentoring Program from three to
five high schools,” said Dr. Julia Heslin, Sister of Charity,
Halifax Congregation, Executive Director of Opportunity Programs
for St. John's University. “It’s great to see St. John’s
tutors working with potential students, strengthening our ties with
the community. This program is a wonderful opportunity for
both St. John's University and the high schools we service.”
St. John's University Staten Island Campus received a $70,000
grant from the SI Bank & Trust Foundation to fund its
Tutoring/Mentoring Program. The program launched in January 2004
benefits students at Concord, Curtis, St. Peter’s Boys, St. Peter’s
Girls and St. John Villa high schools.
Administered through the University’s Division of Opportunity
Programs the St. John’s University Tutoring/Mentoring Program
provides more than 250 students with onsite after-school tutoring
and workshops taught by educators and assisted by St. John's
University students. Participants in the program can also take
advantage of SAT preparation courses and Regents Review Sessions at
the Staten Island campus. As of January 2005 new computer
courses and ESL for parents have also been added to the
program.
