Queens, NY – St. John's University is proud to present
“Calligraphy and the Painting of Chinese American Women in the
Metropolitan Area,” from Friday, March 18, to April 26, 2005 at the
Dr. M. T. Geoffrey Yeh Art Gallery (formally Chung-Cheng Art
Gallery). The gallery is located in Sun Yat-Sen Hall on the Queens
campus, 8000 Utopia Parkway, Queens, NY. A reception will take
place on Saturday, April 9, 2005 from 4:30 – 7 p.m. Admission to
the gallery and the reception are both free of charge and open to
the public.
“Many of the works exhibited at this show have been inspired by
the Phoenix, queen of birds and a universal, symbol of the arts
according to Chinese Mythology,” said Dr. Bernadette Li, Director
of The Institute of Asian Studies. “It is exciting to experience an
exhibit that so clearly illustrates diversity within the Chinese
culture. The participating artists, numbering about 50, are from
diverse geographical, cultural, educational, and socio- economic
backgrounds.”
Each artist was asked to select one work for the exhibit
at the gallery. “Calligraphy and the Painting of Chinese American
Women in the Metropolitan Area” also includes oil paintings, water
colors and acrylics. Subjects include landscapes such as
flowers and birds, still-lives and human figures.
“Calligraphy and the Painting of Chinese American Women in the
Metropolitan Area” may be viewed during gallery hours, Tuesday
through Thursday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. and
Saturday, noon - 5 p.m. For further information, please call the
