Staten Island Campus -
First Annual University Day Brings High
School Students to Staten Island Campus
The snow had stopped and the skies turned majestic blue right in
time for the start of the Staten Island Campus’ University
Day. High School juniors from Staten Island and Brooklyn were
given the opportunity to experience a college campus setting, learn
about St. John’s University, and attend classes held by Staten
Island seasoned faculty members.
The activities started in the Campus Gymnasium with breakfast
followed by a viewing of the newly released Admission videos that
provide a brief overview of everything thing that St. John’s offers
University-wide. Sara Anne Purcell, Senior Associate Director
of Admission on the Staten Island Campus addressed over 300
students from 7 different high schools. In the discourse,
topics included:
• The College Selection Process
• Answers to Common Questions of College-Bound
Students
• St. John's University Overview
After the informative address, students attended one of six
Academic Sampler Sessions, held at various locations on
campus. These educational sessions, tailored to
demographically appropriate and progressive topics, included:
• Sport Management: Be in the Game Without
Playing the Game
• Legal Studies and Your Future
• Radio Today: Is Radio Still Alive?
• Great Expectations: Class Matters in Literature
and Film
• Teaching: New Methods in the New Age
Classroom
• Doing Business in a Facebook World
“It was an exciting day on the Staten Island campus with about 300
students from 7 high schools in Staten Island and Brooklyn,” said
Ms. Purcell. “Our first annual University Day afforded high
school students the opportunity to experience St. John’s from a
current student’s point of view.”
The day concluded with a tour which offered students the
opportunity to explore the scenic and dynamic Staten Island
Campus.
