April 17, 2008
April 2008—On Friday, April 11th, eighteen management students
were inducted into Sigma Iota Epsilon Chapter at its fifteenth
annual meeting. Sigma Iota Epsilon, the student division of the
Academy of Management, exists to promote management as a humanistic
and creative profession. The fraternity and its programs encourage
production in the broad sense of the development of
resources--human, financial, and material.
Associate Dean for Global Initiatives, Dr. Linda Sama, was one
of the presenters at this year’s meeting and welcomed the students
into the fraternity with this message: “As managers serving
society, we can never be satisfied with what has simply worked in
the past. The complexities of our modern global economy constantly
challenge us to develop and implement new ways of managing.
Thus, a supportive context is created for the ethical and optimal
utilization of human, financial, and material resources. We must
never neglect the opportunities for creativity and personal
development in our lives through meaningful activities in the
classroom, in the work place, and during chapter activities.”
Each student was presented with certificates and keys which have
the three Greek letters, arranged diagonally from the upper
left to lower right. In the upper right is a replica of the Old
Slater Textile Mill, the first factory built in the U. S., and in
the lower left is a representation of the functional organization
developed by F. W. Taylor, and symbolic of management techniques.
Lastly, supporting the key is a chain which is symbolic of the
spirit of cooperation.
In receiving the award and key from Dr. Shoaf and Dr. Angelidis,
each student professed his or her belief in the values and goals of
the fraternity. Student inductees were: Michael J. Brown, Kristen
Conforti, Akil Friday, Lou Ann Haran, Gordon Harry, Sara Kavanagh,
Julia Kropiewnicki, Brendan T. Lantry, Krishaun Latchman, Diana M.
Lounsbury, Bernard A. Lugay, Iskrena Ognyanova Popivanova, Shilpa
Sahdev, Judith delCarmen Salgado, Jeanne K. Sherry, Judy Amelia
Singh, Waajida Small-Santiago, and Farrah Timpanaro.
The event, organized by Dr. Chiang-Nan Chao and presided over by
Dr. Kiran Ismail, also featured faculty members Dr. Patrick Lyons
and Dr. Larry Boone. Administrators also present included
Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Dr. Victoria Shoaf , Associate
Dean for Administration Cynthia Phillips, Chair of the Management
Department Dr. John Angelidis, Assistant Dean and Director of
Academic Advisement Douglas Leary, and Assistant Dean Renee
Hughes. Walter Reyes, Assistant Director of Human Resources

you ready?” with reference to the challenges and opportunities
facing them in their future managerial careers.
