Dr. Sylwia Gornik-Tomaszewski

and Taxation
Associate Professor Sylwia
Gornik-Tomaszewski joined St. John's University in Fall 2000. She
holds a Doctor of Business Administration Degree with
specialization in accounting from Cleveland State University, where
she wrote a dissertation on: "International Differences in
Accounting Principles and the Information Content of Earnings." She
has received her MS in Accounting Degree from Kent State University
and her MS in Economics Degree from the Academy of Economics in
Katowice, Poland. Professor Gornik has started her academic career
in Poland, where she held a position of an assistant professor of
accounting at the Academy of Economics in Katowice. In the United
States, before joining St. John's University, professor Gornik
taught various graduate business courses at Baldwin-Wallace College
and Cleveland State University in
Ohio.
For many years professor Gornik has been
researching various issues related to international accounting
standardization and regulation. She has published several research
articles that appeared in such prestigious journals as: the Journal
of International Financial Management & Accounting, the
International Journal of Accounting, the Multinational Finance
Journal, the Journal of International Accounting, Auditing &
Taxation, Research in Accounting Regulation, and Global Business
& Economics Review. She has also published in professional
magazines, such as Strategic Finance and Financial Executive, and
written a bi-monthly column on International Financial Reporting
Standards for Bank Accounting & Finance. Her research papers
were presented at the meetings of the American Accounting
Association, the European Accounting Association and at other
international, national and regional conferences. Professor Gornik
serves as a reviewer to academic journals and to meetings of the
American Accounting Association and the Global Business and
Technology Association. In 2007 she served as co-editor of the
Special Accounting Issue of the Review of Business.
Dr. Gornik has received several
academic honors and teaching awards. Since 1994 she is a member of
Beta Gamma Sigma, the Honor Society for Collegiate Schools of
Business. She represented Cleveland State University at the
doctoral consortium of the American Accounting Association in 1994.
In 2002, Dr. Gornik received Tobin College of Business Teaching
Excellence Award for integrating experiential learning into the
curriculum. She is also a recipient of the 2004 Beta Alpha Psi
Outstanding Faculty Member of the Year Award for dedication to
students, and the 2005 honorary inductee into Beta Alpha Psi, the
International Honorary Organization for Financial Information
Professionals. Student Government recognized Dr. Gornik as the
Tobin College of Business Professor of the Year 2004-2005, for her
outstanding contributions to the lives of her students. She
is a recipient of the 2007-08 PricewaterhouseCoopers Faculty
Fellowship for Recognition of Teaching Excellence
award.
Professor Gornik holds two
professional designations: Certified Management Accountant and
Certified in Financial Management. She is an active member of the
Institute of Management Accountants and the American Accounting
Association.
